DJ+a future 1st for Zeke?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

DJ+a future 1st for Zeke?

Postby kris_kapsner » Fri Feb 16, 2018 3:26 pm

In my 16 team league I have consistently been at the top of the league since it began many years ago. I've never produced a pick higher than 12 to the best of my recollection.

The reason I'm saying the above is that I just offered David Johnson and my 2021 1st round pick for Ezekiel Elliot.

Why?

Well, Zeke is 3.5 years younger than David Johnson. So, I'm basically paying an estimated #12-16 pick to get younger. I think they are both elite and in the top 4 dynasty RB's in the game. I've positioned myself to now have the 1.1 pick and I'm kind of salivating at the prospect of having two uber young studs on my team. I think Saquon will be in the top 5 of dynasty RB's at the end of next year.

The owner hasn't signed in yet to see the offer. Am I crazy offering this trade?

Zeke pretty easily based simply on age. A '21 1st is pretty much worthless.

I wouldn’t say it’s worthless, but that’s 3 years out. And even though I don’t think it matters in this deal, your team could hit a wall and start declining and that pick could be earlier than you expect.

I would do it regardless, but I don’t know that the other team accepts.

Hm...interesting. Then dynasty rankings are probably pretty off then. In listening to podcasts, watching videos and looking at online rankings...there is an "elite 4" right now and then the rest. Both DJ and Zeke are in that group together. We are one year removed from DJ putting up a better season than Gurley just did. And it was just a wrist injury.

If this is clear that the Zeke side is better, then there should be a top 3 tier, not top 4. And, Bell should probably not be in that tier either since Bell and DJ are the same age. So, a top 2 tier right now in your opinions?

As for a future 1st being worthless that is three years out, well, this league has been going since 2002. So....

I actually expected sort of the opposite opinion. If find this very interesting....and perhaps indicative that I'm not crazy to think that this trade would be good for me to try to pull off.

I’m sure I’m in the minority but I prefer DJ because you know you don’t have any off the field issues to ever worry about with him. He’s older but has less NFL mileage so I expect he’ll age well.

I've seen rankings with DJ still ahead of Zeke. You're not alone.

Zeke for me. Zeke is younger and I'm more worried about the Cardinal's offense where I'm not as much with Dallas. A late first years out doesn't shift those things enough for me.

I am with you on this too. Character wise they aren't even close. Ability wise I still like DJ and he has tons of tread left. Don't split hairs on a winner. Its not like he is 30 with 8 years of getting hammered.

The 2021 1st barely moves the needle in a trade like this, so take whoever you prefer.

I've mentioned it a few times, but there has to be a time discount on draft picks. I mean, if I offered you the 1.12 this year, or the 1.12 next year, would it really be hard? Of course you want it now. Just like in real life, you want $100 now not $100 next year. Then you move that back three years? It's just not worth very much right now.

Think of all draft picks, including future ones, in terms of their current value.

I would rather have Zeke, myself. So, a 2021 1st is not a biggie. You can probably make a trade in the next 3 years to get a 1st back. Think Zeke's situation is more stable (on the field). Going to be new coaches and QB in 'zona next year. You want to always have the chance to win now, imo.
