Mid-way through my first dynasty draft..

Postby ookluh » Wed Jul 05, 2017 4:29 pm

Hey all,

I know you guys must see a million of these threads.. but I'm midway through my first ever dynasty startup draft and curious on thoughts.. it's probably too late to really turn anything around, but on the off chance that some advice might be helpful, I thought I could at least ask. If nothing else, maybe it will help me realize how to improve for other startups in the future.

12-team PPR, 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 W/R/T, K, DST, 11 Bench
6 pt passing TD, 2 pt bonus for >300 yds passing, 2 pt bonus for >100 yards receiving/rushing

1.02 - Odell Beckham
2.11 - Christian McCaffrey
3.02 - Jarvis Landry
4.11 - Russell Wilson
5.02 - Martavis Bryant
6.11 - OJ Howard
7.02 - Samaje Perine
8.11 - Mike Gillislee
9.04 - Randall Cobb
9.11 - Eddie Lacy

I sort of regret taking Wilson and Howard where I did, but what's done is done. I also think I may have focused a little too much on youth early on, making some marginal passes.. I don't think I necessarily reached hard anywhere, but probably passed up some value in people 29+. Wilson may be fine, there were already 4 QBs gone at this point.. and maybe Howard will pan out in the future. At this point, not sure what my biggest weakness dynasty-wise is. Obviously need another TE to start, then some depth from there.. almost everyone has a TE at this point. I know specific advice is tough since you can't see our draft board, but general thoughts would be awesome if anyone is willing.
12-team SF PPR, 6 pt TD
QB: Allen, Goff, Lance, Heinecke
WR: Waddle, Cooper, Pittman, Hopkins, DJM, Renfrow, Shaheed, Chark, Tillman, T.Scott, Shephard

TE: Andrews, Smith, Tonyan, Ferguson, Musgrave

12-team PPR SF TEP
QB: Mahomes, Herbert, Mayfield, Pickett
WR: Higgins, Mooney, R.Moore, JJSS, Jamo, Landry, Shepard, C.Samuel, Lazard, N.Brown, Eskridge, Atwell
RB: Javonte, Dobbins, Carter, Sanders, Walker, Hilliard, Vaughn, K.Williams, Evans
TE: Kittle, Freiermuth, Trautman, Jordan, Woods

12-team PPR SF TEP, 6 pt TD
QB: Jackson, Stafford, Stroud, Levis
WR: C.Watson, Dotson, Jamo, Reed, Mims, Slayton, Dortch
RB: Bijan, Hall, Achane, Spiller, Warren, Z.White, Spears

I definitely think you reached a few places with the youth, but who knows, maybe it'll work out for you in a year or two. I like the Landry pick in the 3rd.

Agreed, a little too heavy on young talent for my liking, but it could work out. Generally, I try to focus on relatively young, yet still proven talent in the first 4-5 rounds of a startup before looking too closely at rookies (although, there are the exceptions). It's usually around rounds 5-6 where I assess where I think I stand in the league and go from there, but typically trying to compete in the near term. I never like loading up on too many long-term projects right out of the gate.

TE - Austin Hooper, OJ Howard

Team #2, Superflex
QB - Desean Watson, Carson Wentz, Drew Lock
RB - Melvin Gordon, JK Dobbins, JD McKissic, Tarik Cohen
WR - DeAndre Hopkins, Mike Evans, Tyler Lockett, Sammy Watkins, Brandin Cooks, Emmanuel Sanders
TE - Junno Smith, Evan Engram

Thanks for comments so far.. yea, I realized I probably put myself in a hard spot to try to compete this year. Not sure if it's worth bringing in old vet values late in the draft (ie: people with 1-2 years left max) or just commit to the long-term. Also not sure how hard to punt the TE position. Don't think I can link to the draft exactly since it's a private league doing a slow email draft, but could PM you the picks.

Definitely a youthful group. Got some good pieces, though, so not horrible by any means.

Things I'd personally look to do were I to take over a team like this:

Try and sell Perine to the R Kelley owner for a similar young prospect (I personally aim to stockpile WRs)

After the first couple weeks, if Gilly and Lacy start strong, sell sell sell! Actually, add M Bryant to that list, because as much as I like his talent and what he can do for my Steelers, I want no reliance on him in fantasy football

As was mentioned, got a link so we can follow and who's left/when's your next pick?

Depending on who's available, it's not a bad idea to nab old vets that will be of value to contenders come season time...guys like L Fitzgerald, E Decker, F Gore, E Sanders, etc.

A lot of guys in startups will just keep updating in their thread when it's OTC time and who's available, feel free to do as such.

I think the picks are decent picks. Not big on martavis with who was available but overall solid. Who's top players available

Thanks, that's not a bad suggestion. I do have a couple lists I'm working off of, but was thinking maybe you guys might have some experienced general strategies for me at this point, but I guess it's very league specific in the end.

(deleted some picks planning details because I realized a league mate is on this forum too)

Yea, perhaps.. it was late second, and some of the dynasty pundits had him ranked in that range, plus it's full PPR so I gave it a go. Time will tell, but my guess is he doesn't play as big of a role early as some people are saying.

I think you reached with a lot of your picks. CMC, Wilson, Landry, Howard and Cobb are all reaches imo. I don't like your RB situation at all. You would have been better served passing up Wilson and Howard for better RB talent.
