This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Cam Newton for #16 & #22 Rookie Draft Picks

Postby pjb5150 » Wed Jun 28, 2017 5:32 am

I am considering offering the #16 & #22 draft picks for Cam Newton. I think I can get this done. Would you guys recommend this??

I also have the #2 & #12 rookie draft picks.

My current QB's are Andrew Luck and Tyrod Taylor.

I could see myself using Luck or Newton to make a valuable trade at some point. Let me know thoughts. Thanks!

Assume this is not superflex/2qb. Unless you had a deal in place for one of those qb's, I'd keep the picks- this is a pretty deep draft and a lot of value can be picked up in the second round

Thank you sir. Also, really nice rosters on teams 1 & 2. You should be making some serious runs with both of those this yr.

Currently, that trade would be two guys like Curtis Samuel, JuJu, Jamaal Williams,Joe Williams, James Connor types for Cam. I'd much rather take Cam here. Are QBs devalued a little in your league? Sure, a little maybe since not superflex. But Cam is young, has shown the ability to be the overall QB1, and is a heck of a lot more proven than middling rookie picks which have a huge bust rate.

For me, I'm getting Cam here.

If this is a 1QB league, not sure why you even want Cam with already having Luck and Tyrod. Even if you wanted him, that's probably too much. If it's 2QB or SF, that's dirt cheap for Cam.

Your league format will drive this discussion. How many teams? Starting requirements? Do QBs get 4 or 6 pts for passing TDs? How about QBs that run (like Cam), what is a rushing TD worth?

I've seen that the top talent of most rookie drafts is depleted by pick 10 overall. After that it's a crap-shoot (who's kidding 1st overall is a crap-shoot).

If you are worried about Luck not throwing yet, I'd spin the trade this way:
You send Luck to the CAM owner in return for CAM and a 2nd rounder. The second mitigates the risk you will be taking on from having a rushing QB who gets hit alot and will break down before a classic pocket-passer.

(I know about this risk first hand and am always wasting a bench spot with Derrick Anderson... although, same argument could be made for Luck).

On the counter, start tossing in draft picks. Start with 16 and Luck for CAM and his 2nd.

And good Luck!

I appreciate the input from all of you. It is a 10 team, 1QB league, 6 pts for passing TD's and rushing alike. To be honest my team is pretty stacked. My roster can be seen below, will need to get down to 19 active with 3 rookie taxie squad by start of the season.

I am slightly worried about Luck's shoulder, and while I am a huge Tyrod fan, I do not see him as a viable starter if things go bad. But I am more looking to acquire Cam to potentially trade in the upcoming season. There are several owners who are not too savy in my league, with multiple aging QB's. Unfortunately for them, I will feel no guilt taking advantage of them this year as I have been preaching the inportance of resources over the past 2 years, and even sharing my own in hopes of creating a more competive league.

All that said, I see value in having both Luck(#1 rated dynasty QB) & Newton(#3-4 on avg). I think it will provide me value in times of injury worst case scenario, best case I flip 1 in a trade. I also agree with the point above the bust rate on picks in that range is high. I need RB's, and anyone I get in that range is most likely a committee back. I feel comfortable giving up the # 16 & #22 pick as I have the #2 and #12.

Does this make sense to anyone else?

A lot of devaluation of QB's in a 1QB format on the boards. I however think this is a steal for you if you can net Cam for the #16 and #22 picks. Injury and BYE's have to be navigated annually and I'd be feel a lot better about a team with Luck/Cam on my roster as opposed to Luck/Taylor.

I've been neglecting my QB's the last few years hoping Tannehill would develop into a solid #2. So far, hasn't happened. It's hurt my team overall, especially in 2016 when Wilson was hobbled for the entire year. A better backup would have been a real asset to me. I'd make the deal if you can get it done.

I guess why not. I am not Cam's biggest fan that's for sure. But I think a 2nd and a 3rd for him would be a steal.

First if you can do it I would....even if you had to give up the 12 also. But your team Really needs RB's...hopefuly you are taking mixon @ 2 or if #1 is nuts and takes Davis and you can turn the #2 into Fornette.

If you can't get that trade I would look to put the 12 and 16 and 22 together to get up to the top 5 and get two of the RB's.....or even to #6 and grab Lynch, assuming no one has held onto him......

Agreed, my main M.O is to try to acquire him and trade into the top 5. And also hoping the dude with #1 is nuts as you said and takes Davis.
