Rebuild mode strategy

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Rebuild mode strategy

Postby JoshuaGordon_9 » Tue Jun 27, 2017 11:40 pm

I did a team takeover a few months back, and basically shipped most players of value away for picks. I now own 7 picks in the first two rounds, and looks like my team will walk away with the 1.01 or 1.02 in the 18 draft. However, who would you be looking to "buy" player-wise in a rebuild? Guys like Jonathan Williams, Henry, Doctson, Treadwell, JuJu are some that jump to my mind. Guys who could see a big bump in playing time in 2018 or beyond? Not necessarily 2017 breakout talent. Most I've already inquired, or bought, but is there any I'm missing? Would you look to make a few acquisitions like this, or hold tight?

12 Team - PPR
QB (Start - 1): Mariota, Dak, Manning
WR (3): Austin, Stills, JJ Nelson, Treadwell, Funchess, K. Hogan, Shepard, Jaron Brown, Allison, Aldrick Robinson,
RB (2): Ware, Gio, Martin, McNichols, Jonathan William, Darius Jackson, West, CAP
TE (1): Hodges, Leggett, Sprinkle, Swoope, Cook, Anderson, Uzomah
Flx (2)
Picks in 2018: 1,1,1,1,2,2,2,3,4,4,4

I know the team is bad, with many glaring weaknesses (like, the whole thing) but I'm ok with that as that will only drive up my chances of landing Barkley or Guice next season. :D :D Any thoughts on heading forward?

Thanks all
Team 1: 12T PPR SF no premiums, 4pt TDs
QB(1-2) Herbert, Tua
WR(3-5) AJB, Adams, Sutton, Boyd, Bourne, Wicks
RB(2-4) JT, Kyren, Swift, Singletary, Moss, Ford Dobbins, Tucker
TE(1-3) Hock, Jonnu, Kmet, Kraft
3.06, 3.09

Team 2: 12T PPR, TE premium, SF
QB(1-2) Cousins, Love, Tanny, Trask, McCoy, Zappe
WR(2-6) Lamb, Olave, Hollywood, Godwin, JaMo, Sutton, Diontae, Lazard, McKensie
RB(2-6) ETN, A. Jones, Dillon, Hunt, Moss, K. Miller, S. Tucker
TE(1-5) Hock, Brock Wright, Everett

Team 3: 12T PPR SF TE Prem
QB(1-2) Fields, Young, Darnold, Trask, Dalton
WR(1-6) AJB, Pittman, Hollywood, Sutton, M. Williams, Davis, Meyers, Van Jefferson, Sheperd, McKensie
RB(1-6) Jacobs, Sanders, Akers, Hunt, T. Spears, C. Brown
TE(1-6) Schultz, Hurts, Conklin

I would be looking to sell one of your young QBs if you can get good value for them (I would sell Dak over Mariota). Martin is another prime example of a guy to move, but it is probably best to wait until he is playing and putting up points. He is probably the exact opposite of what you want. He looks primed and motivated for a big season this year after his suspension, but his outlook after this year is cloudy at best.

In general, now is not a great time to be trying to buy guys who are all future upside, or sell guys who are better short term assets. In June, everyone is thinking long-term.

As for guys that could increase in value for 2018, off the top of my head, I would say:
RBs:
Henry (although his upside is heavily considered in his current price)
Tevin Coleman (if he starts slow and Freeman resigns)
Alvin Kamara (if he starts slow)
Deep dives:
Devontae Booker (would not be the first player to look bad as a rookie and turn out better)
Jeremy Hill (FA after this season, could see a Blount like revival)
Dion Lewis (Also FA after this season)

WRs:
Lockett
Jordan Matthews (if you can get him at prices similar to his current ADP of round 6-7)
Allen Hurns (could see a bump back up if Lee leaves in FA)
Robby Anderson (looked like a playmaker who needs to add some weight as a rookie, maybe he does a la Cameron Meredith after year 1)
Chad Williams (probably doesn't need to do much this season to get a bump if Fitz retires)
Godwin
Going Deep:
Robert Davis (UFAs or unproven guys in front of him, could be a hot name if Pryor doesn't resign)
Mack Hollins (Same as Davis, replace Pryor with Alshon and Matthews)
Krishawn Hogan (Same as Chad Williams, but UDFA instead of 3rd rounder)

TE: ASJ, Gathers

I have been asking this question on various outlets, and this is by far the best, and most comprehensive answer I have seen. Thank you for your recommendations, and explanations on why.

**Already sold Hill, I can see why you recommend him, I just have a hard time getting behind him. Maybe it was due to not being fully utilized by Cincy? idk, and yea, Henry is EXPENSIVE. Understandable though, should be a stud.

No worries, man! I thought of a few more and edited my post. I am sure I am missing a bunch of names where there is a decent setup for the narrative crowd to love some guys going into next season. On Hill, you might be able to get him off waivers this year if Mixon puts him on the bench. He is not a guy I am actively trying to get, but if you are looking for cheap 2018 upside, he fits the bill.

Jonathan Williams isn't a guy I'd be buying, but all the other young guys people mentioned are good options.

Being it that I own him, and he could see touches very soon, I'll wait and see if McCoy goes down at any point, and ship him to a RB needy owner. Then again, He may have that backfield to himself, and be worthy of a hold in 18... Those young guys are all solid options.

My league is a New England homer league... In order to acquire White it would probably take much much more than he's actually worth, especially given his Super Bowl performance. Good thought though. Thanks!
