Mike Evans for 6 picks?

Postby jpapado1 » Mon Jun 26, 2017 3:53 am

I have an opportunity to trade for Mike Evans. Note that I traded Dez Bryant for 5 first round picks a few years ago. I have an extra first round pick each year through the 2020 draft (I have already moved my extra first this year)

The ask is:
Pick 3 overall this year in the rookie draft
Pick 20 overall this year in the rookie draft
A first in '18, '19, and '20 (his choice in '18, my choice in '19 & '20)
A second in '18

My team isn't quite ready to contend...but Evans is young & likely will be a top 5-10 WR for quite some time. Worth it given that I would basically be trading away my profit from the Dez trade I made a few years ago? Or better to take Mixon/Mccaffrey this year & hold the picks for the future?

I hate trading picks from the distant future, because you just can't plan that far ahead, and have no idea what your team will be like. There's a time-value to this also, in that picks farther away are worth less.

In this case it works out in your favor. That's peanuts for Evans. The 1.03 is the only real asset in there, nothing else is worth more than a 2017 2nd, and some much less. You should accept this immediately.

Agreed worth making the deal. Disagree that the 2018 -2020 1's are only worth 2017 2's at best. Time value is legit but discounting too deep in particular on the 2018 1.

Adding on in support of Evans.

The positive thing I like about trading away future picks, especially the ones you listed, is you always have the opp to get them back.

Another way I look at this is arguably, you are trading Dez for Evans.

I voted for holding the picks. I know it looks like a good deal on the surface, but every year that passes for the next 3-4 years, you have to hope they aren't used to add a player anywhere near Mike Evans' value. (4) 1sts and (2) 2nds are too much to give up for any one player, ESPECIALLY if it doesn't put you over the top as a contender.
Good luck.

If you look at is as trading dez for Evans, it's great. But I have a hard time believing any player is worth 6 first round picks.

Evans... IMO future picks dont help you win now and when you think about the fact that you could trade for & use Evans for two-three years and STILL likely trade him back for equivalent number of draft picks it just makes sense to me. 6 high picks in just this years draft I maybe wouldn't or would possibly hesitate but future picks that far in the future are basically just trade currency and have destorted/moving/unfixed value. A lot can happen/change by 2020 :) Short story long I would pull the trigger on the young dominate wr.

may be in the minority here but i'd prefer to hold the picks and continue building through the draft. You said yourself that you aren't quite ready to compete so if Evans doesn't put you into that area how are you going to get there without these draft picks. I understand the argument for getting Evans but i would take Mixon at 1.03 and build through the draft. Not sure the Evans hype has ever been higher...

I'd give that for Evans, but I hate trading picks that late.
