Win now or build toward the future?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Should my team go for the championship now or later?

Go for the win now!

Win now or build toward the future?

Postby Rotolibrarian » Thu Mar 09, 2017 8:56 pm

Trying to decide my approach for "Team 1" in my signature below. I just traded Moncrief and Ty Montgomery for the 1.07, 1.08, and 1.09, even though I think I can win now if I make some more moves. Although I was the worst team in our 10 team league last year, it seems like half of my team was injured all year (Gronk, Decker, C.J. Anderson, Woodhead, Lockett, etc.) Am I a piece or two away from winning now if I am willing to deal my first round picks (1.01, 1.07, 1.08, 1.09) or should I consider trading my older assets (the big one being Gronk) for pieces to make a run at the title in 2018 and beyond. FWIW, this is an "Empire League", meaning if a team wins two years in a row, we start all over again with a startup draft. The league just started in 2016 and the guy that won in our first year was the 5th seed in the playoffs and not favored to repeat.

I say push for the win now. Keep 1.01 though to take Cook or Fournette, whichever you prefer. After that I say trade some of those picks during the draft when their value is at their peak to get deeper at WR

You had a boatload of injuries and underachievers last year. You have enough youth to go along with the studs that you are in the envious position of being able to do both. Trade Gronk for a WR and roll with Henry. If you can package a couple of those 1sts and move yourself into the Davis/Williams range or maybe Ross falls to you there. Another thought is trading down from the 1.01 a couple spots and pick up another 1st. Throw enough darts at those mid 1st round RBs and you're going to hit a bullseye.

I appreciate your thoughts. Not sure about trading Gronk in a 10 team league though. I feel (when healthy, which isn't very often, I know), he provides such a positional advantage. I certainly could use some help at WR, but I don't know if I am comfortable with Henry as my TE1 going into 2017 (except when Gronk is injured of course :ewink: ).

I say keep pushing. I like the trade you just made, and I'd try to flip those picks during the draft like a previous poster said. You've got a great young team. No reason to blow it up just because the injury bug bit hard last season.

I echo other comments-go for it...give yourself at least another year to go for it as you have players that had subpar outlier performances last year. Godd luck!

Who are you waiving to add all those picks?

No reason you can't compete and build at same time with your current roster. I'd look to consolidate picks or pick and player to try and upgrade tiers. Position yourself to get Davis or Williams with the pick by moving up or package it with anyone but Cooper to get a WR2 type.

Cash in on those picks and upgrade your WR core. I like your RB's for the most part....I think Ajayi is the key here! See if you can snag Hopkins cheap.

team has a chance. you can trade gronk yeah, but i think you should go for the weekly upside and have a solid backup when he's hurt. trade some picks, you have a shot.

Solid team - only need to start 2 WR and it's 0.5 PPR, so their impact somewhat muted. Agree with posts above, just continue to be savvy. Provided no major injury setbacks, I'd say you've got a shot at the playoffs.

I think youre still a year plus away from competing in a 10 team league. A solid draft will set you up well for 18

piling on with this. you should be able to get a couple of solid WR's simply by upgrading them. Try packaging your late 1sts, early 2nds and some WR2/3 guys for a low end WR1
