Thoughts on Taylor Gabriel?

Postby justdex » Tue Jan 17, 2017 6:43 am

Buy, sell or hold? Was he just a piece of Matt Ryan's killer season or is he actually an explosive playmaker? Can he sustain 2016 level of play even with a downtick in production from the falcons offence as a whole? Would he replicate these performances and usage on another team?

I would be cautious on investing too much on him. Kyle Shanahan is most likely gone, and no one knows if he's just a product of the scheme or if he's actually a quality WR that would put up good fantasy numbers. When Shanahan is gone, the scheme is going to change and he could go back to being Cleveland Browns Gabriel.

He fit the scheme the Falcons are running this year. If Shannahan leaves then all bets are off on Gabriel. So no, I would not be buying and would definitely sell if someone came around asking.

I am a Gabriel owner and really if anyone gave me anything for him close to a 3rd rd pick he'd be gone. Otherwise he's on the roster bubble list for me, like to stash him on taxi yet to see what happens next year but may not have the space.

Think the problem you run into is when to use him. He's not going to provide consistent week-to-week production and odds are good the weeks you sit him are the big weeks which influence you into using him the following week which are duds and you get pulled into that cycle. Let that be someone else's problem if you get anything of value.

I like using guys like that to close a deal. Someone's inevitably seen the big weeks (without looking at the bad ones) or read some puff piece about him being an X factor and will want to add him into the deal.

I would be packaging Gabriel with a 3rd or 2nd round rookie pick and trying to move up a few spots.

Gabriel has some juice, no doubt, but he's 5'8" 167. He's good for real football. In fantasy, when will you ever start him?

While I agree he may not have much future value, I started him pretty much every week down the stretch. From week 8 thru week 16 (championship week) only once did he not have double digit points (9.4).

His size is definitely the biggest hinderance for him ever being a high end producer.

I wouldn't be buying for sure. Maybe now is a good time to capitalize on his current value in a trade.

As an owner I plan to sell. Even if he does become a consistent producer, I think his ceiling is limited so however he performs I will be able to deal with. But, like stated he was pretty much a starting WR if not a start at FLEX week 8 onwards. Especially as a Julio owner it might be nice to just have him on my bench as a replaceable target if he has to sit a game or two. I don't think Ill sell for less than a second. note, my league has only been using 3 rounds until this year and hasn't valued seconds to highly.

Well, this is all relative.

If you are buying, what is the price? I would buy if he's cheap enough (Id likely pay another stash player I liked less/they liked more)

If you are trying to sell, what are people paying? I would sell if I received good value, but he clearly has a bit of upside so I wouldn't give him away for free (I'd sell for a pick in the late 2nd-3rd range, mostly because it's a safer stock these next few months)

I wouldn't pay a top 25 pick for him, but I probably wouldn't sell him for much less than a top 25-30 pick.

Dude falls in the 3rd round category, most Dyno leagues have cutdown and I dont think he makes it on much rosters unless its a deep roster.

Yeah in normal size leagues he's a nice guy to have on your bench who you hope you never have to start. Borderline waiver wire except in deep leagues - I don't think many give up any pick as they would prefer the unknown of a late round dart throw.
