Drafting TE's When You Don't Have to Start One

Postby briank » Thu Aug 30, 2018 2:31 pm

I'm about to do a draft for a league that doesn't require starting a TE, but you can flex them, so my question is who is worthy of drafting in this format, and where should I slot them into my rankings? There are no bonuses for TE's.

I'd project them and slot them based on their projected points. Then I'd drop the elite ones about 1/2 a round to a full round and the eliminate the majority of the rest.

Why? Lack of upside.

Say that you have -- I'm making it up -- Brandin Cooks and Travis Kelce projected to score the same number of points. I'd take Cooks -- uncertainly and all -- every time since he has a far higher ceiling. Heck, I'd let someone else take Kelce, whom I project to score more points than most WRs, over, say, Goodwin -- upside. I'd rather pass on Kelce in the 3rd or 4th round and take Goodwin, who'll be close enough to projections, later.

Gronk might be an exception since his ceiling is about as high as any WR.

Otherwise, TEs like Olsen, Rudolph, etc. don't offer the upside compared to the WRs projected to score the same number of points. They only offer reliable floors. And you can always find those type of players on the waiver wire.

I play in a similar league. I never take TEs unless they fall well below their ADP.
