Valuing TE in Draft

Postby whitezog » Mon Aug 13, 2018 7:20 am

League changed to add a specific TE position so not sure how to evaluate/compare.
4 keepers (3 strong WRs, 1 RB kept - see signature) with draft upcoming
Through trades my first I have picks: 1.05, 2.01, 2.06, 3.10 ...

Available players are:

RB: Barkley (for sure gone) Howard, McCoy, Penny, Carson, RJones II, Michel, KJohnson, Duke Johnson, Freeman, Coleman, Collins, Hyde, Mack, Thompson, Lynch ...
WR: Cooper, Diggs, Thielen, Landry, Smith-Schuster, Davis, Baldwin, Parker .....
TE: Kelce, Ertz, Olsen, Engrem, Njoku, .....
QB: Almost all except Rodgers available

Was thinking would take best RB with first pick, but wondering if Kelce or Ertz are in different enough tier at TE to pick and get RBs later? Thanks for your thoughts!

My initial thought was to definitely take a RB or WR because that's the natural thing to do... But after I thought about it, I think taking a TE is very viable in this spot.

You're probably going to miss out on the first tier (Barkley) and second tier (Howard & McCoy) of RBs. And you don't really need a WR since you're stacked there. I have the next RB tier of 6 guys (Collins, Penny, Lynch, Jones, Michel, Kerryon) so at least one of them will fall to you at 2.01.

So yes I'd rather have Kelce + Kerryon vs. Olsen + Collins for example.

Difficult decision and your tiers may be different than mine. But I say go for the elite TE.
12 Teams / 7 Keepers Each

QBs: Kirk Cousins
RBs: Leonard Fournette, Jamaal Williams, Dion Lewis, Rex Burkhead, Ty Montgomery, Phillip Lindsay, Kalen Ballage, Jerick McKinnon (IR)
WRs: Davante Adams, T.Y. Hilton, Corey Davis, Keelan Cole, Tyrell Williams, Courtland Sutton, Tre’Quan Smith, Christian Kirk
TEs: Zach Ertz
DEF: LAC, NYJ
K: Caleb Sturgis

I'm also a believer that Kelce (or Gronk) offer a great advantage over all other TEs and would grab Kelce in your shoes. It's possible that Dallas Goedert eats into Zach Ertz's value to increase that gap, and Greg Olsen likely has just one season left in his career. There are also some rookie TEs I'll be investing in with the hope that by the time Gronk retires they'll be stepping up. But for now I'm ride or die with Kelce and/or Gronk.
QBs: Patrick Mahomes, Carson Wentz, Lamar Jackson. (Limit 3 QB per team.)
RB: Saquon Barkley, Joe Mixon, James Conner, Jay Ajayi, Adrian Peterson, Peyton Barber, Afred Morris, Jordan Wilkins, Chase Edmunds, Ito Smith, Derrius Guice (IR).
WR: Odell Beckham, T.Y. Hilton, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Brandin Cooks, Sammy Watkins, Dante Pettis, Corey Coleman, Josh Doctson, Tre'Quan Smith
TE: Rob Gronkowski, George Kittle, Austin Hooper, Mike Gesicki, Hayden Hurst, Ian Thomas
PK: Chris Boswell
(IDPs, start two per week per position):
DL: JJ Watt, Chandler Jones, Myles Garrett
LB: Zach Brown, Lavonte David, Reuben Foster,
DB: Landon Collins, Reshad Jones, Adrian Amos, Keanu Neal (IR)
