1.01 or Michael Thomas, 2019 Top 5 pick (likely), and upgrade pick 5 to 4?

Postby GoodellsPaycheck » Thu May 03, 2018 9:32 am

Got offered for the 1.01 today

MT
2019 1st which is likely to be top 5
and also would turn my 1.05 into 1.04

Very tempting as its quite a haul, But letting go of Barkley is so tough

It sounds like Guice is going to make it to 1.04 so I would probably take him. Am I crazy not to take this and run?

I'd say goodbye to Barkley if the offer was just Thomas.

Barkley, as "generational" as he's touted, isn't proven yet. He could be just good instead of great. He could continue to have trouble with his inside running and be forced to follow a Reggie Bush type of career path. Don't fall for the hype when you have a proven commodity in Thomas.

For as proven as Thomas is, there are still serious questions about what he is without Brees.

I would actually be less surprised if Thomas is not a fantasy WR1 three years from now than I would be if Barkley isn't a RB1.

That's basically where I'm at. They seem to be becoming more of a run first team and Giants offense has potential to be insane plus they added hernandez

I definitely shared your concerns about MT last year, and I still do to an extent, but even with Brees logging his fewest pass attempts since 2009 and finishing as a back-end QB1 last year, Thomas still posted a WR1 season.

I prefer Saquon to Thomas straight up, but I think the other pieces more than make up the difference. Assuming the 2019 1st is from the team that the OP is trading with, I don’t see Barkley outscoring Thomas to such a degree that it significantly alters that pick’s position. I also have a tier break after 1.04, so the pick upgrade this year is significant as well.

Ive been told pick 2 is going to be Penny, and 3 likely to be Rojo

So that 4 pick would be guice, sony or chubb. Im having a tough time deciding which one so I would still be happy at 5 in all likelihood

We have a 6 keeper rule. So the 2019 1st team would look something like

Mariota
Landry
Barkley
Hyde
Ajayi
Cohen

While I think Barkley will be a very good to great NFL running back he has not done anything yet, so I have to go with the proven talent and extra picks. Also I think the Barkley love is WAY WAY out of control. Todd McShay did an article about where Barkley fell vs RB from the past 10 years no surprise A Peterson was number 1, but tied for 2nd were Barkley and T Rich. So lets not sit here and say that Barkley will automatically be a Pro Bowler or HoF player when T Rich was out of the league in 3 years. No prospect is a sure thing no matter the rating for the draft.

Here is the link to the article.

As hard as it is to trade Barkley, Thomas and the first is a good return. The 6 keeper rule does make it closer though.

I guess I should mention....I didnt want to get too detailed and make you guys read a ton....but we have rookie tag rules for keepers.

Basically any non-tagged player's keeper cost is their total points the prior year divided by 10. 300 points = $30 to keep. $105 cap for 6 keepers

If you tag a rookie, they cost $5 year 1, $10 year 2, and $15 year 3. So as you can see...having barkley locked in at a fixed rate for 3 years is extremely valuable when zeke, gurley, and bell owners are paying $28-$40 for them

All of that info changes the story though and is needed to make the correct recommendation. In a standard PPR league I feel it is the Thomas side all day, but in your case with 6 keepers and now Salary cap restrictions that swings it way closer and probably to Barkley.
