Any league out there older than 39 years?

Postby Rotomavin » Sat Feb 17, 2018 7:58 am

Our keeper league is entering it’s 39th continuous season. We started in 1980, in Chicago but now based in Southern California. Two of the original 10 teams are still in the league. What stories we have from the early days before the internet. Would love to communicate with other leagues close to 39 years.

I was told we are the oldest league. Give me some feed back!

39 years, nice! Not older, but we go back to 1989 and there weren't a lot of leagues back then. I had never even heard if it in 1980. I only have one other guy left in our original league who has been there since the beginning.

It was definitely a different world then with no internet. After our 3rd season we added a second league, and then another a couple years after that. I had a dedicated phone line with an answering machine on it for owners to call and leave their waiver claims and lineups because my wife was sick of people calling the house and bugging her.

Watching the games was fun because you never really knew how you were doing. I'd keep my lineup and my opponents lineup and manually add points when scores happened. No Sunday Ticket back then, so you got whatever games were on the networks. No RedZone either, so every once in awhile you'd get an update from New York on a score in another game. You would always have mystery TDs, like you would see that San Francisco had three TDs but you only knew who scored one of them, and you have a guy on the 49'ers so you MIGHT have more points. Then you watch ESPN highlights that night and figure out a few more scores, but there are still a few you don't know. So you anxiously awaited the morning paper so you could check the box score. Having live scoring makes life way easier, but sometimes I miss the fun of keeping track that way.

We do have 6 out of the original 14 owners, and 2 of the next wave of owners have been there since like 2000 or 2001. I wish we kept better records until we switched to RT Sports in 2004. We have the list of champions and runners-up from 1996-present but no roster details outside of our memories.

The one pretty cool thing is no one has won our championship and then quit the league at some point after. The only champion to leave the league died. Do you guys have a traveling trophy?

39 years! WOW! That is very impressive! My 6 player keeper league just finished our 25th season. We are still 14 yrs behind yours!!! We still have 4 GM's from the original first year in 1993. Our league has under many changes in 25 years. We still hold live drafts every year. And being the Commish, I have written league history of every year of the 25 and for every team that has been in the league. I also have complied a W-L record matrix showing how all teams have fared against one another. My dynasty league just completed year 18! The things we Commissioners had to do before the Internet and computers! Those were the days.....

Question, does playing for 25 years or more make us "experts" or just very old? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Congrats on being in a 39 year league.

Actually it was having to wait for the Tuesday edition for the MNF box scores to finalize the weekly scoring! And damn if the game was on the west coast and went past the cutoff....late box score on Wednesday! Oh the drama! Back then commissioners earned their money, tallying the scores by hand.

I believe my first pick of fantasy football back in 1993 was Dan Marino. Not sure what pick I had in the first round. But you guys will get a laugh out this though... the #1 overall draft pick of my Die Hard league wS K: Pete Stoyanvich of K.C. No joking..... the #2 overall draft pick was the league's MVP that season QB: Steve Young. The GM that Stoyanovich #1 overall thought that the scoring system favored kickers due to distance scoring and thus a kicker would outscore a QB every time. That was not the case and we still joke about that first ever draft and #1 overall selection to this day.

Remember that back in 1993, baseball was the fantasy sport everyone played. Football was just starting to take shape back then. There was no forums like this or daily fanstasy sports shows and there was NO, ZERO draft prep work for the first fantasy draft. We all met at a bowling alley during training camp, picked our players and decided to how this game would play out. No one at that first draft in 1993 ever thought the league would still be in existence today 25yrs later. New players to either of my two leagues marvel about the league's written & kept history. I even made up my own draft board that can be used for any fantasy sport draft.

And I thought we had the record

1986 for us in the War Room Football League.Ten team league with 7 original owners still going . One original owner still has never won. About year 25 we decided to name the trophy after him because that was the only way he'd ever get his name on it

Much the same as you guys the USA Today, Sporting News for tips. I was in the C-band satellite dish business so we could watch every game , an NFL package forerunner but even better... FREE !

The kicker going first was familiar as my brother went with Nick Lowery #2 overall. CLASSIC PICK !

We had done baseball and basketball for a couple of years before we had our inaugural season. Made up our own categories that we have stuck with til this day. No waivers pickups either. Know your bleep on draft day or suffer

My league participation has outlasted two wives (maybe that was part of the problem) so I hear ya on the irritated wife thing. Live draft always and on our one owner's boat for the last 20+ years. Only once has it been rained out. The Football Gods have looked out for us.

Updated all time stats for owners winning% each year. My son took over a franchise and has been known as David Shula ever since. I have been the resident wise guy with yearly predictions, league awards and draft needs & mock draft prognosticators such as Skip Clueless, Jay Glazedover look at the War Room Football League is a recent years staple. Of course the guru of them all, " THE HELMET" himself, Mel Kiper, Jr.

Been some classic trash talking through the years. Two divisions,Namath & Bradshaw that the loser in crossover record between the two has to pay for the beer & food and serve the winners at next year's draft. Hired some professional "dancers" one year to go out on the boat to waitress. The fellas loved that one, wives not so much

KUDOS TO 39 YEARS!!!

I started my first league in 1993 when I joined the Army.

Through numerous deployments, the league survived somehow and we actually expanded to multiple leagues.

I retired last year but the leagues are still going strong with a few of the original owners still participating.

That is iconic, our League is 32 years old and we have 8 of 10 original owners still. The ninth owner has been in for over 25 years as well. Our league is very different from most, we have a roster of 22 and we keep 14. The drafts every year is all about getting rookie talent and trying to get younger. My first team had Joe Montana, Thurman Thomas, Dalton Hilliard, Eddie Brown and John Taylor. My favorite player of all time was Chicago RB Neal Andersen, he was a scoring machine. We had hand written stats and standings and the USA Today was the bible we used to figure the scores each week. We use to have to take lineups by phone, pretty funny! I have won our league 4 times which puts me in 3rd place for championships. It has truly been a blast.

I'm one of six remaining original owners in a redraft league that started in 1987. On the night of the first draft, I was the youngest guy in the room. Now I'm somewhere around the median age. The current commissioner was around 9 or 10 the first time his dad brought him to the draft. For the first 10 years or so, we didn't know the official weekly results until they arrived in the mail on Thursday. And I took Dan Marino with the first-ever 1.01.
