The Football Data Warehouse

Postby Telperion » Thu Mar 19, 2015 9:26 am

Update:

I'm working on updating this with 2015 and 2016 data. I changed my collection methods which should make this a much more sustainable project in the future. Hopefully there will be a new release in the coming months, if I have time to complete it.

-----

I've undertaken a project to acquire and assemble football data, and I'd like to share the results with the forum. A lot of this you can get elsewhere, but not much of it can be had together like this.

Downloadable version:
https://drive.google.com/folder/d/0B0zE ... kwY1U/edit

Appendix

Here are some of the advanced metrics being calculated:

Code: Select all

Burst Score: =((0.5*[Broad])+(1.7*[Vert]))

Agility Score: =([20YdShuttle]+[3Cone])

Speed Score:
=SWITCH(TRUE(),
   ([Pos]="RB" || [Pos]="FB" || [Pos]="QB") && [Wgt]>0 && [40Yd]>0,
      (([Wgt]*200)/([40Yd]^4)),
   [Pos]="WR" && [Wgt]>0 && [40Yd]>0 && [Hgt]>0,
      ((([Wgt]*200)*(([Hgt]/73.5)^2)-[Hgt])/([40Yd]^4)),
   [Pos]="TE" && [Wgt]>0 && [40Yd]>0 && [Hgt]>0,
      ((([Wgt]*200)*(([Hgt]/76.4)^2)-[Hgt])/([40Yd]^4)),
0)

Athlete Score:
=SWITCH(TRUE(),
  [AdvMet]=TRUE(),
((([SpeedScore]*1.268)+([BurstScore])+(11.5*(((1-1/[AgilityScore]*100)*-1)^2)/6))^1.5)/65,
0)

Thanks for this, compiling data is the long and hard part of the journey towards analyzing things yourself.

Many thanks for this it looks like some great data. Having some issues with the date format as I use dd/mm/yyyy and some dates are text rather than serial numbers ... but I'll be able to sort that out. Will start playing around with it.

Good catch, I standardized them with ISO-8601 format so they should work better across platforms and locales now.

The concatenated ID fields are obviously text/string/varchar but those are only for joining tables in Excel.

Excellent. This may take up most of my day tomorrow.

Not had a reason to upgrade to Excel 2013 ... until now maybe? Is PowerPivot the game changer it looks like?

Yes and no; Getting relational data in Excel opens up tons of possibilities if you have a lot of static data, but you can't enforce referential integrity so maintaining data that changes is challenging. It's available in 2010 so you don't need to upgrade.

All in all once you have it you'll wonder how you ever did without it.

2 updates:
- Online viewable sheet has been removed, it's not feasible to keep both that and the CSV's updated.
- Updated Metrics CSV to include Player Profiler data.

I updated the folder, all the duplicate players are removed and the data all-in-all is refined to have more accurate player data. I also got rid of the CSV's and instead wrote an export tool so any individual table can be dumped to a CSV if needed.

Also, the 2015 rookies are now imported and integrated.

Some interesting historical numbers since 1990:

- The top 5 career leaders in standard scoring PPG with a minimum of 5 years experience are Aaron Rodgers, Steve Young, Peyton Manning, and Matthew Stafford (all around 19PPG). For non QB's, it's Arian Foster, Tomlinson, Peterson, Terrell Davis, and Barry Sanders (~16 PPG). WR is Calvin Johnson, Marvin Harrison, Terrell Owens, and Randy Moss.
- In PPR RB / WR, Marshall Faulk jumps to #3, and Jerry Rice moves ahead of Randy Moss (~11 PPG).
- The top 7 PPR seasons all belong to Faulk, Priest Holmes, and Tomlinson. For a frame of reference, Faulk's best season was 7PPG better than Charles' 2013 season.
- Beckham's rookie year was the 24th best PPR season since 1990.
- Beckham's 39.6 PPR average in the fantasy playoffs 15/16 is the 5th highest since 1990. Faulk averaged over 40 in the fantasy playoffs in back to back seasons. Jerry Rice and Jamaal Charles are the other 2. In the 1995 fantasy championship, Rice put up a 14/289/3 line with 10 rushing yards, good for 61.9 fantasy points.

Position and draft round cross tabulated with measurables (undrafted is round 0). Includes agility score, speed score, and burst score.
