When drafting

Postby joeya2001 » Thu Apr 11, 2019 5:07 am

Is it smart to take BPA or need

reason why I ask is in my league their might be a chance I can get Kyler or Haskins but I also need a RB.

in taking a QB I'd have 6.

would the better play be taking the QB or need?

BPA all day. You should never reach to take someone just because you think it will "complete" your team. Give yourself some credit, and try and hustle a trade, or find a later round RB gem, or a waiver wire RB - you can still "play" your way into figuring your team out.

Just because you have a position of strength, likewise, shouldn't stop you from doubling down if there's a screaming value in your face. If you're convinced someone is the BPA, take them, and figure out a trade later.

In my personal experience I’ve found that when drafting for my positional needs over best talent available I usually regret it, not so much because the players I get aren’t good but because I keep seeing the players I passed up on doing way better. My clearest recent example was in 2017 when I took Mike Williams over Joe Mixon because I needed help at WR more than RB. Doh!

That being said, I would never take a QB in the first round in a 1QB league.

To a degree. All things equal, say you have a grade of 90 on a rb, wr, te, and qb—then draft for need. IDK about taking a 6th qb. Unless that QB is elite.

This is all helpful with the next coming days,

I have my eye on Kyler because I don't want anyone to get him.

BPA seems like the way to go.

I guess it depends on your definition of BPA. The problem with BPA is we don't really know who the best player is and won't know for several years. I usually group players in tiers, and then take whatever position I think is more valuable to my roster, per league settings and roster construction. For example, the two tight ends are easily superior to their peers, but nobody is taking them top 5, most likely. So obviously they're not drafting BPA. Same with the QB's in superflex leagues. Daniel Jones is straight trash but if he goes in the first round he's going to be a top 15 pick. Will Grier too. They're not even close to being the best players available, yet they might be the more valuable fantasy asset over the next 2-3 years.

At the end of the day just throw a dart. Or trade the pick for a player you can actually start.

Both.

Limited number of picks? Draft BPA.

Plenty of later round picks? Throw a ton of darts at your area of need.
Please speak to clarion contrarion before considering the use of vetos..

Usually BPA, especially in SF regarding QBs.
If in a shallow (10 team or less) league with league mates who don’t like to trade and everyone usually has plenty of every position then draft what you need.
No need to hoard what everyone already has.
