Sterling Shepard - Biggest Giants Winner in OBJ Trade?

Postby pvillebiker » Tue Mar 12, 2019 8:33 pm

Assuming the Giants draft a WR with that 1st they just got and bring in no other vet to take over OBJ's slot. Doesn't that give Shepard a big big opportunity to be the lead WR for the Eli-powered (cough, cough) attack? At least until he's replaced by Haskins about game 8 or 9? Giants in rebuild mode have no incentive to really replace Odell's production this year.

Most will likely view Shepard as supporting cast, not capable of much more. He has really good chemistry with Eli. And there's only so many targets Saquon, Engram, and a to-be-drafted rookie WR can take right?

Shep's YPC progression:
2018: 13.2 ypc
2017: 12.3 ypc
2016: 10.5 ypc

Dude's been steadily improving...

My Guess: Shep's targets go from 105'ish (his season avg when healthy) to the 125-140 range. Catches up to 75-80 and > 1,000 yards.

Engram is the biggest winner.

I think everyone in the passing game is a winner. Shepard and Engram particularly. Eli has no arm, so lots of short stuff. Barkley may be the loser. He'll probably get a ton of receptions again, but No OBJ means more focus on him. He may end up with the same amount of yards on more touches, which is not a good thing.

Totally, much better talent than Shepherd and has shown what he’s capable of when OBJ has been out.

I'm not hating on Shepard because I think he's good and volume is really all that matters, but Engram's splits without Beckham in the lineup are a top 5 TE. Shepard is really good too but I don't think he's good enough to maximize the targets while facing stiffer competition. Engram will almost always have better matchups.

Shepard will have a lot to play for this year, considering it's the final year of his contract...and barring NYG drafting a WR in the first two rounds...he should be featured.

Both he and Engram "produce" more when OBJ was out of the lineup...but as other's have mentioned, Engram saw a far bigger jump...yet, that's not saying a whole lot since he took a large backseat in 2018 (considering his 2017 usage).

Engram wins. Shepard wins. Coleman has another shot even if they draft someone so that’s a win. I think Barkley loses.

I think it depends on who they add in the draft. If they add DK I think it’s good for Shepard because he will mostly be used as a downfield threat in his first year. If they draft AJ Brown consider that a loss for both Shepard and Engram because his game is more short and intermediate

I think it's likely the Giants have decided they really like a particular WR from this draft class. And I think it's a factor in their decision to trade Beckham.

But for now, it's reasonable to tap Shepard as a winner here. Just don't overhype it, though -- I doubt the Giants plan for him to be their #1 WR of the future. He's had opportunity before with Beckham on the sideline, and it doesn't seem to me like he did nearly enough with it to make that case to the coaching staff / front-office.

No Way, He can't play WR. One of the worst WR's I have ever evaluated. He should have gone to the defensive side long long ago.

Engram is the biggest winner IMO.
