Apparently the Steelers are on the hook for 21.1 M in dead cap money with AB. The largest in history, apparently, or so I read. Ouch.

I would argue there is a good chance AB is relevant as long as Mack is. Mack wanted way too much money. Would have hurt the Raiders more than helped them making that much. I don't believe Mack will be a dominant DE well into his 30's, and I think AB has a few good years left at least, based on his skill set and training regimen.

No, it is not silly. Gruden said the team could not afford to sign Mack. Clearly that is not true. The decision making of the Raiders' front office is comical.
Mack's contract was massive. 141 Million with 34 million up front plus his another 7 million in salary in year 1. That is 41 Million year 1.

Cash flow wise that is a lot a coin even for a few owners and the Raider's owners in poor compared to most owners. Brown was guaranteed around 30 million over 3 years but that is different than writing a a check up front for 34 million.
If you are even half as knowledgeable as you pretend to be, you would know any NFL team can arrange for this without issue.
You really do not know what they arrange for; the ability to raise money is one thing but with the massive uncertainty last year about where the team would even play this season along with the massive expense to ultimately move the team is costly. I actually thought the Raiders were smart moving Mack.

To put in some perspective. The total contracts of picks 24 and 27 combined in 2018 dollars was 22,219,364. The signing bonus of those 2 picks were 12,300,326. Add in the 2018 Pick 4 bonus of 19,587,900 and all 3 first round picks will be in the range of 31.9 Million upfront cash, 2 million less than just paying mack 34 million upfront last season and they won't have massive contracts with Mack and soon to be Cooper.

Brown is expensive but not a huge hit on cash flow today.

Financial decisions certainly went into the Mack decision as one of the best players in the league and now one of the highest paid players in the league.

Are the people happy about the Raiders spot happy it is the Raiders or just that it isn't the Bills or some other really bad spot?
Do you think he will still put up top 5 or 10 WR numbers on the Raiders?
I think of all of the possible and realistic situations; the Raiders were one of the best landing spots from a fantasy perspective.
I absolutely still think he will put up top 10 fantasy numbers; with the upside to still be one of the top.

I guess I don’t understand how people don’t understand why this is good for the Raiders. They need to draft some WR’s anyways, why not bring in a guy for very little (a 3rd and 5th are a steal for Brown) and have your new WR’s learn from the best? At the same time, this keeps the team relevant for the fan base.

Things change quickly in the NFL. It would not shock me if the Raiders are a playoff team in 2-3 years and Brown is still a key player on the team.

It also gives Derek Carr a legitimate weapon. Next year is crucial for him. He improved dramatically in the 2nd half of the year in Gruden's system. They will in all likely hood lose Cook, their only real threat in the passing game. As Mayock said, Carr needs guys around him to properly evaluate him. This is by far the best WR he's ever had. Coop and Crabtree were a really good combo a few years ago, but AB put up over 100 reception and 15 TD last year. He is far from done. Even if they had drafted a WR early, or still do, they aren't going to walk in year 1 and be a top WR. They are still rebuilding, but can definitely focus on the defensive side of the ball with this draft now, and the first round is full of talent there. They could draft 3 potential starters on the D that would probably be making the same combined salary or less than Mack for the next 5 years, oh and have a very early 2nd round pick, as well.

Raiders added Trent Brown too; giving the o line a big bump and allowing Carr more time to throw to AB.

He's a really good player but keep in mind neither SF or NE wanted to retain him. Giving him up for mid round picks.

SF was shifting their line to an outside zone scheme so they needed smaller, faster linemen. I wouldn’t read too much into that. He was just way too big for their scheme. I’m also not sure you can say NE didn’t want to retain him. He left as a UFA, so I guess you can argue they didn’t want to tag him, but lots of guys don’t get tagged. Further, NE lost Solder just last year to UFA as well so maybe they just don’t like paying linemen.

True, don't know about SF but Belichick is a genius and will find some dude to play great at 1/2 the price. His value is he can play both LT and RT and is effective. That team desperately needed an upgrade in their line and can now focus on defense in the draft which this looks to be a strong and deep class.
