Chiefs draft picks

Postby Huh » Mon Jan 21, 2019 9:49 am

This is sort of an extension of the Damien Williams convince me thread. Kc has a first and two seconds and I wonder what people thoughts are on the direction they could take.

General thought is they will nab an rb with one of them which is quite possible. After perusing their projected roster for next year defensive reinforcements seem necessary. Also backup te has a hole. They use two tes a surprising amount.

I think the big one we are not talking about is wr. It would not surprise me if that first is used on one of the top ones. With Conley likely walking and Watkins a constant threat to miss time I think there is a huge opportunity for a rookie wr. That offense looked a little less potent when Watkins wasn’t in there. If they do grab one early (or late even) we should be gobbling that player up.

No way to know... Reid will, more than likely, go BPA. The real question is, what RBs are you really worried about the team taking in this draft class? There aren't many, that I can think of, that are better gambles than Williams. There are more COP backs in this class, imo.
Team 1: 10th Year: 10 Team, PPR
2014: 3rd, 2015: 2nd, 2016: League Champion, 2017: 7th, 2018: 3rd, 2019: 5th, 2020: League Champion, 2021: 4th, 2022: 5th

QB: Aaron Rodgers Matthew Stafford, Brock Purdy
RB: Tony Pollard, Cam Akers, Ezekiel Elliott, Javonte Williams, Kyren Williams, Chuba Hubbard
WR: CeeDee Lamb, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Allen Lazard , Michael Gallup, Donavan Peoples-Jones, Tyler Boyd, Romeo Doubs, Corey Davis, Marvin Jones, VDS
TE: Dalton Shultz, Mike Gesicki

2019 picks: 1.1, 2.3, 3.5
2024 picks:
Round 1: (1)
Round 2: (1)
Round 3: (1)

They need defense, as made even more obvious yesterday

I think the Chiefs are far more likely to go defense and/or interior oline with their first three picks in the first two rounds than rb or wr. If someone unexpected to them falls, then sure, but my money would be placed on other positions. Round 3 is where I would more seriously start watching out for a rb or wr.

O line would make sense as well. When Mahomes has time, he's a glitch. Not the best under pressure, but who is?

Given the way they could not cover anyone to get off the field on 3rd down in OT, I think they will be investing in some DBs.

Their system provides RB production regardless of the who is in there. Sure an elite player will produce more, but in OT, they allowed Brady to convert a 3rd & 9, and two 3rd & 10s. Andy Reid has never been someone to draft a RB early and he won't this year either. They need to protect the franchise QB and upgrade the defense.

They'd be packing their bags for the super bowl if they had a better defense. My gut tells me 2/3 of their first 3 picks will be LB and SS. Heck, the other pick could also be defensive line.

There are FA out there that will have better upside than some of the rb in this class.... Doubt that KC will draft a WR high but, crazier things have happened. A.Reid did draft J.Maclin highly (late first) if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah. If you watch the Chiefs post-Hunt, there's no reason to believe spending high draft capital on an RB is something they need to do. They need playmakers and depth on defense. I do think they'll bring in an RB one way or another, but I'm guessing Day 3 of the draft or FA.

I think Williams played great for the Chiefs, but I can't help but feel like this is a Rawls, Collins, etc. type situation. You know, a bunch of guys own Williams so all talk about how good he is and how he won't be replaced is just what people want to happen. I think this is a good sell high opportunity and I hope none of you go the way the Alex Collins truther did where he was adamant that he would rather have Collins than Mixon to start the season. We are really capable of deluding ourselves to fit the narratives we want to believe.

Agreed. Earliest I see them taking a rb is in the third unless no other rbs have come off the board before their second rounders (LeSean is the only guy he has taken in the first 2 rounds, when he slipped to #53 and was a great fit for the offense). Even then, Andy has a clear preference of taking OL, pass rushers, and DBs early, if they are available. He does have a history taking wrs early, but I just don't see it this year (again, unless someone unexpected drops) with the depth of defensive talent available and having Hill and Watkins on the roster.

I guess we will have a better indication by what moves the Chiefs make in NFL FA. Obviously if they sign a "name" RB before the draft then they are not so likely to spend a higher draft pick on one.
Please speak to clarion contrarion before considering the use of vetos..

If I'm the Chiefs, 80% of my resources (draft and FA) this offseason are spent on the defensive side of the ball. Obviously, if a talent at RB falls in the draft to them, like any team they are going to consider taking best player available in the mid-rounds. Or if they can get a bargain at RB in the FA market. But realistically, they should be looking at upgrading the defence first and foremost or bolstering the offensive line which is never a bad idea.
