Startup - Rookie Picks as Draftable Assets

Postby Prison_Mike » Thu Jan 17, 2019 6:19 am

I'm doing a startup soon and it's looking like the Rookie Picks will be draftable assets.
I've never done this before so I was wondering if anyone had any tips.

I'd be very interested in the 1.01 but I also don't want to hamper my team by taking a rookie pick when I should be drafting known commodities. (For reference - I've got the 11th pickof a 12-team startup - PPR/1QB)

Where do these picks typically go?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I dont think the 11 hole is a good spot if you want 1.1. Its early in the process, but my guess is that pick 1 goes in the 20-25 range. You can likely do some trading to get there if you'd like, but even then... Id take the proven asset in that range.

1.1 I wouldn't really consider until mid 30s honestly, doubt it'll last that long but no way I'd take it over guys like golladay, michel, kerryon.

In last years draft, it would've been a 1st rounder sue to Barkley. This year I think it's in the 30-40 range

Oh damn, I didn't realize they went that high.

Nevermind then - no way I'm using a pick within the first 3 rounds on someone who's never played an NFL snap, no matter how much upside they might have lol

I really doubt that the 1.01 this year will be a Top-12 startup pick even during draft season. It may not even be a Top-24. Rookie picks in shaky draft classes are risky to take early in a startup with so much proven talent and upside on the board. Somewhere in the 30-40 range sounds right.

Ahh good point, I suppose it depends entirely on who's at the top of the rookie draft board.
And this year, there isn't a consensus #1 guy (at least not that I've seen)

Yup,combine that with the fact that there isn't a slew of guys that everyone loves(looking at you 2017) who were all legitamately worthy of being 2nd/3rd round picks and your looking more in the 3rd-5th range depending on settings. There's good players, but IMO there more comparable to the tier 2(AKA non barkley) from last last year

The ADP page I set up is a good gauge (http://mizelle.net/mfl/2018)

By default the page shows the latest ADP data (December mock drafts). Those ADP values aren't good comparisons for your situation because they take into account the player's situation and 2018 production.

For your startup draft you're drafting purely based on the player (don't know what the situation will be). In order to see similar data for 2018, change the "What drafts" dropdown to show April Only. That was before the NFL draft, so you'll see what the general consensus was for the rookies coming out. For example, Barkley was #8 overall, Guice #26, etc.
