Thanks for the insight Panthers... I know the Ravens ESPN writer is the same way at times. I guess they make some off of the clicks too? Haha

Lesson: all writers can be facetious, gotta find the truth. I still think it's worth watching in this case though and I guarantee it will be a story until he confirms one way or another

Newton has surgery

Postby FantasyFreak » Thu Jan 24, 2019 3:39 pm

Supposedly a "minor procedure" but what does this mean for Carolina's offense, how they build, and if he misses time?

Its only an arthroscopic surgery. Which indicates he should be good to go for all off season activities.

He'll be healed from this in weeks but that's only if they didn't find anything bad inside to make them go back in

I think it was smart to do scope surgery right away. Give him time to heal from that, and get work in OTAs throwing a ball. Then they can reasess and see if that was hopefully all that was needed, or if he needs a bigger Andrew Luck type surgery and to sit out the year. This gives him the best chance of playing 2019 without being the limited 2018 version we saw

Much more worried for his longevity in the league tho. He's always been a guy constantly banged up, and now he's had a knife to his throwing shoulder.

Best news you could've hoped for honestly, now to hope either A. the shoulder fully heals or B. they bench him for the entire year

I had my knee scoped and I was back to running in 2 weeks. He's fine.

Whats not fine is his value. Cant give him away in a 1 QB league. Im stuck on the train till he shows that the first half of last season wasnt an outlier in terms of improved accuracy and less reliant on his running ability.

So there’s now talk that Newton might not be the starter when he comes back... no idea how that works. Beating up on the Cards and a Ramsey-less Jags doesn’t do much for me and the win against the Texans was pure defense.

Cam has never been a good passer.
Now that he can't use his legs due to age, his days of being a franchise QB could be done.

Yep. I think they are, especially after his shoulder issues appearing to make his passing even worse. He may start again, but the Panthers will be looking to move on, IMO. I do not see an extension coming.

What most concerns me is that none of his injuries have been handled cleanly. They've lingered, gone in directions that take the coaching staff by surprise, and overall derailed Cam. On the bright side, they don't seem to be forcing him back early.

Yep, many of us called it.

Being a running QB in the NFL has a shelf life, just like being an RB in the NFL does. Cam took a ton of punishment as a runner in his career and it's added up. Now, he won't have the passing chops from the pocket to compensate for it.

Someone will undoubtedly take a chance on him because of his history, but he just isn't the same player without the threat of being a runner.

Two main drivers of the Cam narrative,
1. How well Kyle Allen continues to do - every win makes it harder for the Panthers or Cam to resist the obvious. He's bound to lose one sooner than later.

2. Cam's desire to keep his job - I really wonder how much fight Cam has left. He sounded ultra tired and a bit defeated in that cigar video. Maybe Luck started a trend and Cam's next? It's likely Cam can get right again physically, at least enough to get his job back. Does he really want to though. I'm not sure he does, but there's clearly a "get healthy no matter what it takes" possibility. Just not sure his job will be there when he gets back!
