IDP Dynasty League Improvements

Postby BigNastyJacko » Thu Dec 06, 2018 1:09 pm

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The commissioner, myself, and one other league mate (board of directors I suppose you could call us) are going to be meeting to look at improvements to our league to make sure it is running at it's best and most enjoyable. I was hoping you could offer your input on a few subjects in hopes of helping me plead my case on some things. The signature below has the current league settings and here's what i'm looking to discuss:

1) In 2020 we are going from standard to .5 PPR. With that said, I would like to go to TE premium as well, but would you suggest 1.5 PPR or just 1.0 PPR? I would also think we need to adjust tackle points as well with 1.5 points per tackler and maybe .75 for assists? Defense scoring seems like it needs a boost as it's been down compared to offense for awhile.

2) I've been pushing for increased Rosters for years and we have bumped it up a little from what we started eith. With it a full IDP Dynasty League and playing 16 players per week there's nothing more frustrating than having to drop a player for a bye week because I can't roster enough backups on the defense side. I would like to jump from 30 to 40 but is that too many? Not enough? I like the idea of the free agent pool being as thin as can be to increase value of draft picks and the need to trade. I feel with 30 spots and a 10 player taxi squad for 1st and 2nd year players you don't have much room for players to develop if they aren't studs right away.

There are a few other smaller things, but these two I would like your opinion on to plead my best case. Thank you in advance!

30 man rosters is crazy shallow IMO, when you have IDP.

Definitely go at least to 40 man.

Go to 40 for sure, need at least one roster spot backup per starter plus some extra for developing
I would say as a rule of thumb +.5ppr for TE premium tends to work fairly well

Thank you for the input! After looking at other teams and seeing the roster sizes I knew we had to change. Like you both said it's so shallow and for a dynasty league you shouldn't have to drop players for byes or injuries.

Perfect. This was a local league that we started 6 years ago, and was our first experience in a dynasty league so we are slowly improving it as we go along. I would think the best way to do a jump that bid would be put all players on waivers for say, a week, and let waiver priority take over until we fill our rosters? A 10 round supplemental draft might be a bit much.

Yeah that would probably be the best way, another option would be to delay it until the rookie draft, expand it to normal rounds+X and then make it rookie/FA

If there is objection to a straight increase in roster size, at least negotiate to go to 35 by reducing Taxi Squad from 10 to 5. This will give people more flexibility on their starters when bye weeks and injuries occur. If you do that it should also make the case to increase overall rosters easier, say by just adding 3-5 (and therefore going from 35 to 38-40 overall). Just an idea if you are met with objection to such a significant increase overall.

Going from Standard to 0.5 PPR is a larger shift in player values and I would suspect could be met with more objection, depending on the owners and league rosters. The same is said of giving TE a premium. If you and your 'board of directors' have the Kelce's and Ertz of the world this will likely be looked at even more skeptical. These types of shifts do change the landscape of player values in a league, so don't be surprised if you're met with objection. If you can get from Standard to 0.5 PPR by itself I would consider that a win. Adding TE premium may not be worth pursuing...though getting it all done in one swoop could also be better than breaking it into two (ie. one change this year, TE Premium in a year or two). People in dynasty don't necessarily want things changing on them as they've spent time building rosters based on the current structure.

As for IDP, I'm a fan of more balanced scoring, but similar to the above, feel that this can be met with challenge given it changes overall league values and dynamics. Simply put, I had considered this in the league I commish, and while i obtained some leaguemates feedback, I ultimately simply joined another league that had what i wanted rather than disrupt my leagues dynamic. Scoring changes of any significance can create 'winners and losers' within the league based on rosters and make some currently content owners unhappy. This can be due to having gone more Big Play at LB (rather than Tackle focused), or simply by having focused more on Offense, and by increasing Defensive scoring suddenly a more Defense focused team becomes a bigger contender because Defense accounts for a bigger % of weekly scoring all of a sudden. Lots of dynamics to consider.

For any scoring change, I would suggest proposing a 2020 or even 2021 timeline for implementation to allow people to navigate the transition, similar to most other rule changes of significance.
