Do we think Haley would step up IF Jackson gets fired?

Postby AussieMate » Mon Oct 22, 2018 3:43 am

Title says it all, I can only hope the Browns finally do it and fire Hue in the next 2 weeks. The real Question is who steps into the coaching role? Who would you prefer etc?

Haley would only be an interim option for this year. Both Haley and Williams are failed HCs themselves. I don't believe either has the temperament or personality to be a stable and effective HC. I think Williams actually understands this about himself. I dunno that Haley does.

Looking at the coach roster, If Hue is fired midseason, I think it'd have to be one of these two volatile personalities getting the interim promotion. The only other guy on the staff as experienced and respected as Haley and Williams is Saunders, and I think Saunders eschews HC opportunities even more so than Williams. Zampese would have been a fashionable option if the 2017 season hadn't trashed his rep.

You know. Looking at this year's retooled staff, it's almost like Hue intentionally filled it with personalities and resumes that would make unappealing interim HC options in the event of his mid-season firing.

It's the one thing I give Hue a lot of credit for. He knows how to keep himself insulated, boost/falsify his reputation, and somehow convince Haslam that he's part of the solution and "the baseball guy" needs to go. Wonderful at elevating himself and holding the coaching position. Horrible at the actual job, though.
How many people do you know like this? Probably a few. There are a lot of people out there in positions of authority not because they are well suited for the job, but because they know how to play their cards to elevate their status.

Good ol' Freddie Kitchens, a.k.a. "Fat Freddie." The notoriously overweight former Crimson Tide QB that's bizarrely coaching running-backs now.

Freddie averaged like one yard per carry with his sneaks. Not sure what he has to offer Nick and Duke.

Haley definitely will be the interim if Hue is fired. After Bountygate Williams is never getting a HC job again, even as an interim.

True, if there is one organization that would do it it's the Browns, but I think Dorsey has enough sense to avoid adding that extra media distraction to the situation.

Why?
This is a league that just had a Joe Mixon vs Tyreek Hill primetime game where the announcers spent half the game praising them. Tyreek Hill beat his pregnant girlfriend a few short years ago but you think something that happened a decade ago is really concerning the nfl? Bountygate is dead at this point. Williams probably won't be a head coach because he wasn't a good head coach when he had the chance with the Bills 15 years ago.

He was a DC when bountygate occurred and he's a DC now. It's not as if he was a HC and now can't be because of bountygate.

Mixon was 18 when he punched a girl who shoved him and called him the n-word. Tyreek’s actions were far less excusable and far more deplorable, but even he was only 20 when he made that idiotic decision.

Gregg Williams was in his 50s and had been coaching in the NFL for 19 years when he placed bounties on players’ heads.

Are we so sure that Jackson is let go?

If they were going to ditch him, this past off season was the time to do it, when the team only won 1 game over the last two seasons. Now they are competitive and have doubled that total less than half way through the season. Four of their games have gone to overtime and could have gone the other way. We could have been looking at a winning record for the Browns if just a couple things bounce the other way for them in some of these games.

Even with this start, it's not inconceivable that this team still hits 6 wins this year, with multiple overtime losses.

I don't think the Browns fire him if that's where they finish. But, we will see.

I'm not saying that I don't think the Browns need a new coach. I'm just not sure they move on from him.

If the Browns lose the next 3 (which is highly likely @PIT, KC, and ATL) I'd expect Hue to be fired on the Monday following the game vs ATL heading into their week 11 BYE.

The amazing thing is...Hue has accumulated so many losses for the Browns that...by losing the next three, his winning percentage only drops from 7.6% to 7.15%.
Abysmally bad winning percentage. Even more astonishing that it's gone on long enough that it is hardly affected by another handful of losses.

He can win the next nine straight though and bring his average to four wins a season...so he's got that going for him.
