Bortles

Is this the end of the Bortles show or was this just a “one week thing”?

Probably just a one week thing, although it should be the end. Time draft or trade for a QB, Jags would have looked good with an Alex Smith under centre

Financially, they're stuck with him another year. They would only save $5M by cutting him, compared to $18M in 2020. I think he'll get another crack at it, even though it's clear that Bortles is not any team's long-term QB.

I think due to the contract they will give him first crack every week but sooner or later (maybe if they drop out of playoff contention) he legit gets benched

Agree with this. As a NYGs fan I was praying they would make that move. I think front offices lack common sense sometimes. Sean Payton is one of the best for a reason.

Bortles is done. Maybe he gets another year in because the Jags are stuck with him, but if you're benching your "franchise" starting QB for Cody Kessler it's gotta be a rough sign. Kessler is actually a decent game manager in my eyes, an 'Alex Smith lite' type QB, who won't win you many games but won't lose you many either.

He'll be back starting for them but this is his final year there barring something unforeseen.

I own Bortles in a SF, and thought that he was on thin ice last year, and drafted a QB. I was really surprised when he received a new contract.

Can't really complain though. I don't really understand how or why it can happen, but he is one of those players that is good for his fantasy teams, but not really good for his NFL team.

My understanding of the new contract was that it was really mostly just a 1-2 year deal in terms of guarantees and everything.

I cannot imagine him starting next year. He's regressed after having made tangible improvement last year.
