Snake Draft vs Auction Draft for Dynasty Startup

Postby CliffOliver » Tue Jul 24, 2018 12:10 pm

I'm looking to join a dynasty or keeper league this year. Generally I'm looking for a league that is 12-16 teams PPR. For dynasty or deep keeper, do you guys prefer a snake or auction draft? I see the arguments for both sides. In terms of competitiveness, longevity, and making a good team, are there distinct advantages/disadvantages doing one way or the other?

I'm sure this will be a heated debate, but it's not close for me: auction. Give everyone the chance to build their team with any player they see fit.

In a snake draft, if I draw the #12 pick, there is no chance for me to get the top handful of players. That's a tough way to start.

No question - it's auction. As stated above, give everyone the opportunity to get every player.

Auction is the best strategy, but requires experienced managers.

Wasn't this exact question brought up only a couple weeks ago?

Auction is the ideal, however I would only do it in person and if every owner were in attendance. Rare does that ever happen anymore and personally nearly impossible for me to accommodate. I'd rather be in a snake draft at this point.

prefer auction, some of my best teams have come from that, helps if you know rookies and can get a value.

would agree it should be in person, not sure how it plays out online

Have you done a slow auction on MFL? 12 hour timers from last bid, proxy bidding, multiple players up for bid at once. It works really well. I prefer live, in-person auctions too, but if that's not possible, slow auction is a good alternative.

No, and I won't do them. There is a lot of strategy in an auction that cannot be applied to this format. If I participate in an auction, I like it to be one player at a time nominated owner by owner.

Sorry, but this is just asinine. I would understand it if you said, I've done it, I didn't like it, and I'm not doing it again. But to knock something that you haven't tried... Well it just makes no sense.

Just about everyone who has done MFL slow auctions loves them. Doing one nomination at a time would be silly. Part of the challenge is managing multiple bids on various players, while others are bidding on other players. The situation is fluid, unpredictable, and very exciting.

Sort of.

The live auction remains the format that most people have the least experience with. The overwhelming majority of people who prefer slow auctions to live auctions have never done live auctions.

I hope the appeal of this point to you is obvious given your earlier position.

There is nothing at all silly about one player at a time. It is different, certainly. But different formats present different challenges. What is telling to me is the number of people whose favorite format is live auctions who have also done slow auctions and drafts.

I just can’t envision the logistics of doing a dynasty live auction, with between 300 and 400 players. Unless you did a 30 second clock, it would take 6 to 8 hours, at one minute, which is very little time to make dynasty decisions. Any more, and you’d spread it over many days. Totally impractical, imho.

I guess you could do a slow auction.... but that would be painful, weeks, months.
