Dynasty Startup Strategy - Discussion

Postby joshcone10 » Tue Jul 17, 2018 6:39 pm

I am doing some research into startup drafts and the strategies that get employed in them. If you have anything you would like to add here feel free to add to the discussion!

You cannot really take a set strategy into a dynasty startup. If you're playing with seasoned dynasty players, the best thing you can do is look at a trustworthy sites dynasty ADP and check out where some of the players you'd be interested in will fall.

One thing I have always stuck with is leaving round 8 with 4 WR's and 4 RB's. In rounds 9-11, I will take 3 QB's who have safe jobs and are youthful enough to still be in the league in 3 years. I'll play matchups with them all year. Here would be a dream draft for me looking at 2018 ADP and having the 6th pick ...

1. Barkley
2. Cook
3. Cooks
4. Hilton
5. Michel
6. Henry
7. Jones
8. Shephard
9. Winston
10. Goff
11. Dak

Of course it may not all go down exactly like this.

It completely depends on settings. Is there a particular setting that you are interested in?

A few generalizations:
Wrs have longer careers than rbs
If you don't draft one of the top 3-4 tes you may as well wait
Kickers and defenses can be drafted at the end
You don't really need more than 2qbs in a 1qb league
Draft best player available (use position only for tie breakers)
Don't worry about bye weeks

Trading back whenever it makes sense and acquiring future picks or round jumps later in the draft.

"Win now" by taking aging players will place you in a rebuild by mid-season. Don't fall for that trap.
If you can't leave at least a 20% tip, you can't afford to eat out.

1. Trade back early and often
2. Depending on league rules, punt qb
3. Have Fun

I don't agree at all. Get an elite QB if you are able. Trading for them is a lot harder than drafting them.

Somewhat depends on the league, but I agree. In my experience, trading for elite QBs is more expensive than the (lately ~4th round) startup cost to acquire them. Landing a top 3 qb gives you a huge points per game advantage over your average opponent’s qb, just like owning an elite at any other position. Although, I’m not sure how many more years this will be true. There’s a flood of young, talented QBs entering the NFL. Gone are the days of middle of the pack teams starring Joe Flacco. Now, the worst of the top 12 could be argued to be Stafford, a guy that is capable of 5000.

Still...although we’re seeing a depth of talent in the league now, the statistical pool still drops rapidly after the numbers you can more reliably expect from Rodgers, Wilson, maybe Cam, or betting on another fountain of youth year for Brady or Brees.

I lean toward drafting WR's over RB's for the 1st couple of rounds, I'd rather go OBJ or Dhop with the 1.01 and 1.02 before I take Gurley/Zeke and I prefer KA/MT over guys like LF and Hunt and Cook in the early second

It's funny because I would say the opposite of this. The majority of the time when I see a startup picks trade once you plug the players in (either the ones selected or via ADP) it's the type of trade that would get blasted as totally one-sided in favor of the earlier player if you evaluated it as players instead of pick numbers.

Yeah, I prefer to trade up. It’s easier to fill in pieces around better players. In a recent startup I traded my 2nd & 3rd pick for 1.05. So I left the first round with Hopkins and Zeke... almost doesn’t matter what else I have in that team, it will be competitive.
