I give Anthony Miller, I receive Ross and a 2019 2nd

Worth it?
I would take the Ross side here.

Thanks for the advice! I know both players are getting some hype from camp so I'm quite conflicted

ninotoreS wrote: Mon Jul 30, 2018 8:54 am His only competition to start on the outside is LaFell, really, because Cincy seems to be dedicating Boyd to the slot. Boyd's also having a good camp, by the way.

Other than perhaps run-blocking on the perimeter, there isn't anything LaFell does to enhance the offense. On the other hand, Ross doesn't even need to be targeted on a play to help Green and Mixon; his speed changes the way defenses have to play the other two just by grace of being present on the field.

I have to think LaFell is a very passable obstacle for Ross. LaFell turns 32 this year, PFF graded him the #104th 'best' WR in football last season, and his yards per reception in '17 plummeted to a career low, more than three yards less than his previous two seasons, implying he may not just be on the cliff, but has already fallen off it.
What about Malone? He has been getting a fair amount of hype as well.

I confess I forgot about Malone when I wrote that. Yeah, Malone had been doing well before a hamstring tweak.

But between two second year WRs that mutually didn't do anything their rookie year, I'll bet on the guy picked 9th overall before the guy picked 128th. :p

If Malone comes back quick from the hamstring thing and picks up where he left off, I suspect his biggest impact could be on whether or not LaFell actually makes the roster.

He's a twig and a decoy. Not even worth a round 2 pick.

Dude he's 5'11" 190. So many successful NFL receivers with lower BMI than Ross.

ninotoreS wrote: Mon Jul 30, 2018 3:54 pm Dalton might indeed be a problem, though. His deep ball isn't a strength, and Ross tends to be too passive when adjusting to underthrown balls. At least on the Huskie tape.
The same sort of issues he had working with Browning at UW, who couldn't consistently hit Ross deep because of the ground he could cover in a short period of time. Too far downfield too quickly (if he wasn't being pressed) for Jake to put the ball where it needed to be to catch Ross in stride. Good point about Dalton.

That said, buying highly drafted players who disappointed their rookie season at a discount is generally a good idea. I'd be willing to take a shot on Ross and pick up the 2nd rounder in the process. It's not as if Ross completely bombed on the field, he just wasn't healthy enough to see the lineup and make an impact. I expect better in 2018.

He looks close to 200lbs now.

Oh, I know. I got sick of watching Browning underthrow Ross during my '17 study.

Ross would have put up over 200 yards on Adoree Jackson when UW played USC if not for underthrows.

I thought Malone flashed a lot in his rookie season. With Lafell falling out of favor, I think Malone is the favorite for the number 2 spot. Boyd is likely the slot.

Malone caught six passes all year and was a healthy scratch for six games.

Okay, but Malone hasn't gotten any 1st-team reps. There's no apparent evidence he's competing for that spot.

Realistically, Malone is competing with Erickson, Core, and Auden Tate for the final spot in 4-wide sets. Malone's also sidelined now with a hamstring issue, as I was saying. If he misses multiple weeks it's likely he'll be the WR5 or lower to start the year.

Talk to start the offseason regarding Malone was focused mostly on whether or not he'd just make the 53-man roster (I'll be surprised if he doesn't).
