Would you rather have more elite WR's or RB's

Postby Jcedwards » Thu Jun 14, 2018 9:08 am

Currently I would say I have 4 stud (or a very high probability of becoming a stud) RB's (Howard, Mixon, Kamara, and will be Barkley). I have 3 stud WR's (OBJ, M Thomas, Cooper).

I'm currently working on a package of Howard+ for Hilton+. So my question is would you rather have more elite talent at RB or WR (in terms of quantity).

Top RBs score more than top WRs. Once you get to rank 5 or so, the positions flip. WRs tend to have longer shelf life. For me it depends on how I view my team. If I'm rebuilding I hoard WRs, if I'm competing, I sell off a few stud WRs for stud RBs.

Whichever position has the most required starters.
Not all that counts can be counted. Not all that can be counted counts.

This opinion is going to change based on whatever was the higher scoring position the year prior; it's simply a constant back and forth of what have you done for me lately.

A lot of people are reverting back to RB because of a perfect storm between a Gurley outlier and a disapponting year for WRs last year.

Then I'll prefer RB.

In leagues where you start 2-4 RB but 3-5 WR, I'll typically take the young stud WR over the young stud RB - but in start 2? Give me the RBs all day.

I'd like to have one elite RB!

I usually don't have a high enough pick to draft them (assuming I'd make the correct selection with the pick(s) I did have). And they're impossible to pry from an owner once they hit.

In general, I think I'd prefer to have more elite RB's due to what is generally a shorter shelf life. If you have a better record of adding WR's that pan out for your squad, you can hold them for several productive years. Usually longer than what you'd get from a RB. More turnover at the RB position from a production perspective means you've got to find top-tier talent more frequently to pair with your elite WR's to stay dominant.

I see it as a balancing act that I've admittedly had a hard time mastering.

I play in leagues with big play bonus so the WR's tend to have more 40 yard plays. This is a big factor for me.

I also like to flex WRs because I feel like RB's are game flow dependant. I think WRs have a safer floor unless it's a PPR Scatback or my 3rd is guaranteed touches.

Unless the starting reqs are something crazy unbalanced I will always take the stud RB. WRs just can't put up the raw pts that RBs can.

Gurley's 2017 was really good, but it wasn't even close to the best RB season of all time. But at 25.42ppg, it might be better than any WR season we've seen.

Moss' 23 TD season, Antonio Brown's 136-1800 season, Megatron's 2000 yard season, Rice's 22 TD season, all of these were fewer PPG than Gurley's 2017 which was merely a top 20ish season compared to what RBs have done in the last ~20 years.

Another big reason I prefer WRs to RBs is that RB's always seem to be fighting for their lives even if they've become established starters...

I seen so many have their value drop drastically from one year to the next just because they bring in a new rookie to replace a guy who had hell of season the year before. A few examples are Ware, Tre Mason, Zac Stacy, Rob Kelly, CJ Anderson, Gio, Jermy Langford, Andre ellignton, Jay Ajayi(when on the fins)...

I know I'm not bringing up hall of famers, but everyone of the guys mentioned above has had a solid year, they probably burned someone who bought high on them to have their replacement drafted the very next year. It's such a volatile situation from year to year and if they get injured they don't have any gurantees get their jobs back. Langford and Ware are examples of this.

WRs on the other hand I feel once they solidify their spot, it's theirs. Even if someone gets drafted, they many times complement them instead of outright replacing them. Will fuller, Sterling Shepard, John Ross are example of this where Nuks, OBJ and AJG value are barely affected by 1st round pick drafted at WR.

Sure, but the question is whether you would have elite WRs or elite RBs, not whether you'd have elite WRs (Nuk, OBJ, AJG) or solid RBs that put up a decent volume-based year.

I know this isn’t the right forum to discuss trades and all, so I’m not going into all the details, but here is the situation in question:

Get rid of Howard (would leave me with Kamara, Mixon, Barkley as main RBs)

Get either Hilton or A-Rob (would leave me with OBJ, M Thomas, Hilton/ A-Rob, Cooper as main WRs)

So it is either 4 elite/ very good RBs and 3 elite/ very good WRs or vice versa. Settings are your normal 2 RBs, 2 WR, 1 FLEX.

Something I've been noticing over the past few years. The injuries have been depleting my RB cores much more than my WR cores. Two years ago I had 3 (of 13) teams lose the top 4 RB's due to injuries. Last year I had another team do the same. I've been collecting RB's more lately as a result. It's much easier for me to find WR's on the wire than RB's. Every year when I look at my teams I'm trying to have at least 4 viable starting RB's (fully expecting to lose at least 2 through the season.

I would prefer Hilton/Arob over Howard in a 1/2 PPR league like you're in. Howard is one of those RBs that will perennially be around RB15 in scoring due to his lack of pass catching. Arob/Hilton have the ability to be top 5 WRs still.
