Question about integrity...

Postby mnpacker » Sun May 20, 2018 10:58 pm

As the commissioner, I've been accused of collusion and had my credibility called out by a few newer owners to the league. Not everyone in the league knows each other, as people are spread out across the country. It was said the I "use my influence over my friends to continue to trade for ridiculous talent. I admit, I've made some trades over the years that I've clearly been the winner of. However, I do not force anybody to make any trades with me. Some offers I've inquired about. Others have been initiated by others. In this case, I made 2 trades.

Trade #1:
I gave: L.Miller, T.Cohen, ARob, and 1.12
I received: Stafford, CMC, and 3.07

Trade #2:
I gave: Stafford, CMC, Brieda, W.Fuller, D.Parker, M.Goodwin, 4.12, and 2019 2nd
I received: OBJ and 1.01
(This owner did not have much and was looking for parts.)

Again, I think I won this trade, but I didn't force anyone to make the trade. Am I wrong for making the trade to better my team? Should I just sit pat, allowing other teams to get better to create more parity? A few of the newer owners are threatening to leave the league. I'm curious as to what the opinion of the DLF community is. Thanks.

Two aspects to this-
A) Trades even?
B) Commissioner role as it relates to trades.

Trade #1 is very even. Don't care for CMC, big fan of ARob. Trade #2 is hogwash. Very uneven. For OBJ alone, that's a pile of garbage for what some consider the top value dynasty piece, nevermind the fact 1.1 was involved.

I've seen some people think commissioners should not accept trades that are slanted towards them. That some think they should consider the health/balance/integrity of the league when accepting and making trades. I think that's hogwash, too. An owner has a responsibility to attempt to improve their team over time. That responsibility is completely independent of whether they're filling a commissioner or co-commissioner role, or some other official capacity within the league. Doing less than everything they can to improve their team is the true disservice to the league, akin to not making waiver moves or making/accepting trade offers. If they make an offer that appears tilted, or an offer of theirs is accepted, that fact is completely irrelevant to whatever duties they have.

That said, I can understand why new league members would be upset about seeing trade #2 happening. However, that has nothing to do with whether you're the commish.

The issue isnt you, its the owners that arent aware of player value when dealing.

Anyone complaining would have made the deal. I do think that you may have to get owners serious about the league if you want to bring in new owners. Most of my teams, i picked up as orphans, but id have no interest in playing in a league that has a trade like this. As a new owners, it would leas me to believe that therr may be a few incompetent owners, and that the commish has no problem with using them as his "farm teams".

Not saying thats the case, but appears that way to a new owners.

As a a commish your primary job is to guarantee the health and welfare of the league

as a manager your job is to maximize within the rules your squad's upside and results .

Those missions can be at loggerheads at times - If offered a deal like OBJ & the 1:1 I would advise the other owner to shop those assets to see what he could get or at least advertise they were for sale on the league chat/message board .
I have done this numerous times - I will wait a few days for other managers to throw their hat in the ring but if they dally I will do a deal that I like for my team . Many times manager will find a better deal or one he likes better and many times I have done the deal . If there is an uproar I will point out look that player(s) was being shopped if you wanted in the mix you should get in the mix , as opposed to standing on the sidelines whining after the fact.

I don't see an issue with #1. That said, you had to know you were taking advantage in #2. As commish, you need to hold yourself to a higher standard, Doing these kinds of trades, instead of trying to help the other owner get fair value, impacts not only your integrity as commish, but the integrity of the league as a whole.

Trade #2. Cmmooooon man. I'm with Clarion's view on this. Advise him to shop around or show him some trades involving the 1.01 or OBJ lately.

I know it is unfair, but as the commish you could actually cheat if you wanted to. Why don't you cheat? Presumably because you enjoy the competition. But unfortunately, to have that competition you have to not only not cheat but you have to not appear to be cheating. The scrutiny is unfair to us all sometimes when we are the beneficiaries of bad trades, but as a commish it is worse. Sometimes you may have to choose between the personal advantage of a blowout trade or the integrity of the league.

I commish a few leagues, and you have to make better choices than if your just a league mate. Yes you want to better your team so if you make a trade you "win" go for it. But trade 2 is just flat out bad

More great reasons for me to finally fire up a zero-trade dynasty league!

Lopsided trades and commissioner/GM conflict of interest piss me off.

Trade 2 is quite possibly the worst trade I’ve ever seen on these boards, and that’s saying something. Even if the other owner offered that to you cold without any prior negotiations (which I find highly doubtful), you should’ve declined and taken that opportunity to educate that owner. I don’t believe in vetoes, but I do think the commish has an obligation to put a trade like that on hold and determine if there is collusion involved before approving it. The fact that you ARE the commish makes it that much worse.

Doubt trade 2 gets either OBJ or 1.01 in any of my leagues let alone both. I can see why some of your leagumates might be taking exception

Unless I knew both you and the person you made trade #2 with personally and knew there was no way that you were colluding, I'd look to leave a league where this went down. That's a bad enough trade that collusion is a more plausible explanation than the owner suddenly deciding to give up two first round startup picks for a guy going in the mid 2nd (CMC) and a bunch of guys best described as spare parts. The fact that you're the commissioner makes it even more plausible that you stacked this league with either patsies you knew you could take advantage of or, worse, people to collude with you.

It's not a surprise that your league has "a few newer owners" if this is the standard its commissioner holds.

You lost trade one. But it's relatively close. I thought your new owners were just being whiners after reading that first one.

Then I read trade #2.......

There's little chance a trade like that can go down in a league without the league eventually crumbling apart. Add to it the fact that you are the commissioner, there are several new owners, you don't all know each other and you do know the owner you traded with. Good luck, but I don't expect those new owners to stick around if it isn't reversed. I know I wouldn't.
