Kerryon Johnson in Detroit

Postby Pullo Vision » Sun May 13, 2018 12:40 pm

I seem to be much higher on Kerryon Johnson than the average person. I love he joined a team that fortified their oline in the first and brought a new line coach with a history of success. I love the Lions took him over other RBs expected to go before him, and they moved up for him.

Most of my excitement is situation driven, which I know some think is natural for an RB. When I focus on the player, I don't like his upright style too much.

I'm thinking about making a hard move for him in the late 1st. Do I need to be saved from myself, or is he a late 1st gem?

If you can get him in the late 1st? Yes he's a freaking gem.

I wouldn't take him in the top 5, but anything after 1.07-8 Johnson is a steal.

I don't see any long-term upside for him. Hopefully he can produce at an RB2 level for a couple years, but he's not an irreplaceable talent.

That's what I'm thinking. If I buy 1.9 for my current draft, I'd assure myself one of Kerryon, Ridley and Moore.

I've seen too many Lev Bell and Foster comparisons to keep my excitement contained. I know DD sees his game riddled with holes, though.

As long as you don’t overpay, late 1st is fine value on him, 8-12 seems like his sweet spot.
I will say though, valuing a guy purely on situation is a mistake a majority of the time.

I had him as my number 2 rb in this class before the draft and I have him as my number 2 rb after the draft. Traded the 1.12 and a 2019 first (projected late). I put my money where my mouth was.

Not a fan so I won’t be buying him anywhere but 1.10-1.12 would be about right

I am higher on him then consensus. I think teams taking Freeman over him are making a mistake. He was elite recruit and produced in the SEC both as a rusher and a receiver. The Lions gave up quite a bit to move up and grab him in front of the Redskins. Sometimes you have listen to people that get paid a lot to make these decisions.

In one league I moved from 1.08 to 1.07 to take Kerryon over Ronald Jones.
Needed RB help/depth and I think Jones is a scat back not a every down player.

I liked Kerryon before the draft, his playing style, patience, power etc and landing in Detroit where they have nobody who can touch what he can do at the goal line and as a thumper, I like him even more.

I would have preferred to trade back a spot or two and get him at like 9-11 range but I wasn't going to chance it.

That's exactly what I keep telling myself, but it's not like we're talking about pushing a 4th round RB with an open depth chart over a 2nd rounder in a crowded one. I'm just trying to find something from making me overpay. I've read some breakdowns that talk about his weight distribution, and how he seems under-weight from the hips down. Reminds me of DMC being described as chicken-legged- McFadden couldn't power through tackles with leg drive, and couldn't really juke or shift. He was more dependent on scheme and oline than other backs.

Just my opinion, but I really think you're going to regret that. RoJo is miles ahead of Johnson talent-wise.

I really like Johnson. His style is very similar to Bell on how he attacks lanes. Id easily take him over that JAG Freeman.

Lions backfield is crowded but hopefully by year two hes the lead guy

Agreed. If you are in PPR, a "scat back" is just as valuable, maybe more, than a 2-down RB who won't have the 3rd down role OR (likely) GL work, at least this season.

1000 yards rushing and 5 TDs is 130 fantasy points. 350 yards rushing, 60 receptions and another 500 yards receiving and 5 total scores is 175 fantasy points. (obviously, just a reference post, not saying Kerryon won't have more than that.)

IDK, I just see both Freeman and Johnson in a lower (not by that much, but still) tier than guys like Rojo, Penny, Chubb, Guice and obviously Barkley.

IS the situation in Detroit that great? Riddick is a lock to be the third down pass catching back, and for this season at least, you would think Blount is the short yardage/GL back stealing the short TDs. Johnson was drafted to replace Abdullah, but even Abdullah was an early draft pick, and it's logical that the offensive line upgrades the Lions made would have helped Abdullah as well. People knock Guice and Chubb because Thompson and Duke will steal touches on third down... well, that's gonna happen with Kerryon too.

Agree with this. A lions RB hasn’t lived up to expectations since frickin Barry. The only one with a safe floor to me is Riddick, and he’s always undervalued. For long term, I dunno. I just don’t trust Detroit. I do think they’re trending in the right direction but this is “fool me three times” territory.

Far as Kerryon as a prospect, I’ve gone back and forth. Liked him a lot early offseason, kinda cooled on him, can’t say why. I think he’s one of those guys that’s maybe gotten too popular as a later pick for my tastes.

All that said he will probly be a beast
