Waiver Wire Power

Postby Orca » Thu Dec 09, 2010 12:26 pm

It felt like 2010 was an odd year for fantasy. There are always players that come out of nowhere, but this year seemed to have more than many.

imagine you were invited to a league at the beginning of the year with the following stipulations:
- you get no draft picks
- you can only pick up waiver wire players
- you get first dibs on all waiver wire players
- you automatically make the playoffs.

That would seem like insurmountable odds. But you'd probably have a roster something like this going into the playoffs (assuming a league with moderate roster depth):

QB - Ryan Fitzpatrick, M. Vick
RB - P. Hillis, BJ Green-Ellis, Chris Ivory, Arian Foster, Mike Tolbert, B. Jackson, M. Goodsen, D. Woodhead, L. Blount, J. James
WR - B. Lloyd, Steve Johnson, Mike Williams (Sea), T. Owens, Amendola, Collie, A. Armstrong, D. Bess, J. Ford
TE - Jacob Tamme, M. Lewis

Not a bad roster to make a run with...

Question #1: Am I missing someone? I feel like I'm missing some guys.
Question #2: Was this year abnormal or does it just feel odd because we're it's the here and now?

Actually, there were probably quite a few leagues that had Foster as a free agent through the off season. He was picked up in my 16 team league right before the off season when someone dropped their kicker. So, he had to be out there and available going into the season in a number of leagues.
16 team PPR Est. 2002 (Champion: 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016)

QB: Russell Wilson, Zach Wilson
RB: Barkley, Mixon, Chubb, Hunt, G. Bernard
WR: Adams, Metcalf, Callaway, Shepard, Watkins, Fuller, T. Williams, Proche
TE: Kelce, Pitts, Njoku, Seals-Jones
K: Gay
D: Vikings

I was debating adding him. I'll edit the original post to add some players as they come up. he would certainly help with the playoff push!

you could be probably trade some of your RB depth. That's scary.

You could also add a couple of depth players to that list:

Brandon Jackson
Mike Goodson
Danny Woodhead

Good calls there. We need some WR depth.

Do you guys think Owens is a fair addition?

No. I've never seen Owens sitting on waivers.

Probably a stretch, but possibly Deion Branch.

If you can't leave at least a 20% tip, you can't afford to eat out.

I think I'll add them all, realizing that some, depending on the league wouldn't be available, although I think Collie and Amendola are pretty solid.

All of these guys are candidates for sure, but I'm going to stick to guys that would be an asset going into the playoffs, so I would say that would be Blount, J. James, A. Armstrong, Bess and Ford

I guess torrain and williams could be as well, but not sure which one...lol. shanahan backfields are fun.

This debate really highlights a problem I see in some leagues that give the weakest teams at the beginning of the year top waiver priorities. Lets say I start the season off terribly and go 0 and 3 or something, yet later make the playoffs because I'm rewarded through waivers with a combo of Foster, Hillis, and Lloyd for example. I hate leagues that do this, yet I stay in some of them because they are still guppy ponds that you can win money in :D :shh:
