Roster Cloggers

Postby Hofbrau » Thu Mar 29, 2018 7:01 am

We've all got em. These are players that haven't produced anything meaningful for 2 or 3 years, but that we still hang on to. Because of draft position, untapped potential, new coach, new team, whatever, we tell ourselves that "this is the year he puts it together". Unfortunately, you wake up at some point and realize that you are a 5 year Ladarius Green owner. ( hey, don't judge. he was gonna be the next Antonio Gates, man ) Here are some guys that it might be time to move on from:
DeVante Parker
Kenneth Dixon
Corey Coleman
Sammy Watkins
Donte Moncrief
Ameer Abdullah
Dez Bryant

Whattdya think?

I've already moved on from Ameer Abdullah and Moncrief. I traded Abdullah for 2018 4.01 and was happy to get that for him.

I don't think Bryant or Watkins qualify as roster cloggers quite yet but they're definitely nearing the precipice.

literally not one, NOT ONE, of these names is a roster clogger.

Moncrief maybe was the closest and his situation change gives enough reason for him to at least be a stash. NOT ONE of these guys is a clogger.

I would say you play in a 6-8 team league if some of these guys are roster cloggers... To qualify, I'd think it'd be someone who isn't producing and has little to no trade value.
16 Team PPR 1 QB - 2 RB - 2 WR - 1 TE - 1 Flex
QB- R.Wilson, B. Mayfield

I think it is fairly harsh to consider them roster cloggers, though some may have a different definition of that than others. I am glad I moved Abdullah for a 2018 1st, last year. Turned out to be the 1.02.

Sure, league size, makeup, roster size, etc. all make a difference. But my point is that Dez Bryant, for example, is almost 30 years old and hasn't produced a statistically meaningful season in 4 years. He likely cost you a very high draft pick and you are probably emotionally attached. I get it, but does he really justify a roster spot at this point? I think we tend to make excuses for why these guys don't produce instead of admitting that a lot of times, its a swing and a miss. Is this the year that DeVante Parker shows up? Or is he just a guy?

I wouldn't classify a lot of these as "roster cloggers". I define the term as a player that absolutely no one wants in trades. The only guys on your list that qualify are Moncrief and Abdullah. I literally would reject if someone offered either to me for a 5th.

Hmm, ok. Maybe I need a better term. Somebody has been sitting on Eric Ebron, Martavius Bryant, Sammy Watkins, etc.. and believes that this is the year. Maybe thats true, maybe not. Lets say that it isn't ( sorry guys ). What do we call this type of player?

I would call that a headache that has trade value. To me, a clogger would be a guy with zero trade value and the only moves for him would be to sit on your roster or be cut and back on the waiver wire.

I agree on Abdullah as i cut him last year. Some of the others would definitely hold trade value though. Dont get me wrong, some of them are definitely eating up space, but they could still be moved for something versus outright dropping.

Most of those guys are startable at various points, except Dixon. Also, Ebron actually finished pretty well last year and was TE13 overall. He was TE6 from week 8 on. If you want to get crazier he was TE #3 from weeks 13-16 in the fantasy playoffs. Lots of absurdness when it comes to expectations and hype on this board at times. Put down the twitter.

Guys it time to stop rostering:

Dorial Green-Beckham.
Paxton Lynch
Calvin Johnson
Christine Michael

Those are roster cloggers. Not Dez Bryant. God damn.

I'd call them perennial disappointments that you want to get rid of but can't drop or trade away for decent value. Basically you're stuck hoping they regain some/any value so you can trade them away. The only player I really disagree with on your list is Watkins though. I value him around 1.06 after being traded to KC. I see WR2 production, maybe even low-end WR1, with Mahomes and Reid.

Zach Zenner is a roster clogger. Guys that flash and you hold and hope, like Ladarius Green.
