START-UP guy has gone radio silent, how to handle

Postby jeaton6 » Fri Mar 23, 2018 9:02 am

In start-up, Guy was on GroupMe said he was researching pick and we don’t hear from him at all. We reach out to him multiple times over the next 8 hours and hear nothing. He then either was autopicked or picked right before 12 hour expiration (6 minutes to spare, we cannot tell which is the case). He is now up again and it has been 5 hours no responses to PM, etc. Rules state 12 hours per pick but this is getting ridiculous. I’ve suggested we 1) tell him you have “x” amount of time to acknowledge you are OTC or it you will be set to autopick until you do so. 2) replace him now rather than the team getting autopicked the rest of then draft.

So what’s the play here?

taking the full 12 hours is obnoxious, but ultimately not a big deal. If you wanted less time per pick, you should have set the timer to a lower amount.
Dynasty player since 2002.
I probably should have done something more productive with that time...

I very much agree with this.

Also, past experiences tell me that the early rounds tend to take longer than the later rounds anyway, due to higher impact of the pick, increased trading, etc.....

yep, I'd agree with this, when you set it at 12 hours, have to be prepared for people to take 12 hours.

At the very least ya'll could just vote and agree to lower it.

I think you fix this problem before allowing this guy to ultimately pollute your league. If this is how responsive he is in the startup draft, why would you want him in the league?

Depending on how many rounds have passed, I may consider refunding him money, replacing him, and completely restarting the draft (I'm assuming this is happening in the first 5 rounds). This is not the type of owner you want in your league. Unresponsive and inconsiderate. Yes, timers exist, but they aren't there to justify bad behavior. I could understand someone neglecting to pick right away in the 25th round, but no excuse for this stuff out of the gate. Just get rid of this joker, replace him, and move on with a group that really wants to participate. The startup draft should be fun time, not a frustrating event.

Everyone has lives outside of this silly game. You don't know what's going on in his life. If he had 6 mins to spare, then he probably made the pick. So he's there and active. Cut the guy some slack.

It’s become clear that he wasn’t attempting to trade, it was unnatural. He was purposefully doing it, not going to get into why. Trying to get lowered.

He’s not active. He said he was doing research than poof he’s gone for 8 hours. He didn’t acknowledge anyone’s PMs, emails, etc. Radio silence. He just finally picked after 6 more hours but no acknowledgement or comment to anyone what was going on. My experience when there is a hold up people have the courtesy to say there will be one or at least after there is one to come on and say sorry about the hold up. Usually no explanation even needed, just three acknowledgement.

Don't set a 12 hour timer if you aren't going to allow owners the allotted time. Most smart commissioners put in a provision that the draft time lowers in each passing round

It's freaking March. Why are you in a rush to finish a startup in MARCH?!

Do you know what the guys job is? Maybe he can't have his phone on him at all times or doesn't have a signal where he works and has to be on a computer to make his picks. He probably did want to do some thinking but then had to do some work or had a sick kid to tend to and life just got in the way. If you dont like that he's taking so much time change the rules... but right now he's not breaking any rules... he's just not as fast as you'd like him to be.

Honestly, this is kind of amazing. This guy is seen as the 'bad guy' for not responding to messages about making his pick quicker all the while he has not broken a rule? In other words, because other owners are obnoxiously wanting him to pick quicker(in March) he has committed some offense? If I was this guy and had entered a league with a draft timer of 12 hours that everyone was aware of, I would be wondering why the hell people are hassling me......

Why are you guys hassling him? If the timer is set to 12 hours, he has 12 hours. People are busy. He's making picks and therefore active. This is the same as vetoing trades because you think it's "unfair". Let owners manage their teams as they like. Maybe he's just a really indecisive person.

What am I missing? What is wrong with everyone? There is nothing wrong with taking the full amount of time allotted to make your pick, it’s actually the smart thing to do. I think the problem is the people who are impatient and act like school girls waiting in line for a Bieber concert. When does the NFL season start?

By the way, if I’m that guy and I see this thread I would leave the league on my own and find a league of grown men to join.
