JAX Cuts Chris Ivory

Postby WhatWouldDitkaDo » Fri Feb 23, 2018 11:05 am

Expected, but I'd say it gives the slightest bump to TJ Yeldon's value now that it's confirmed.

He's a lot like Doug Martin right now. He's nearly done with football. Two bad seasons following a great season in '15, a 2-down RB generally not trusted on 3rd-downs, not much special-teams utility, and cut because the salary he was given after his '15 season grossly exceeds what he's doing now at age 29.

Like Martin, I would expect him to be signed as a camp-body somewhere that will have to fight hard and overachieve in preseason in order to make a 53. So it goes with many RBs in the NFL once they get near their 30s. :(

I dunno that this objectively bumps Yeldon, because toward the end of the season as Ivory became consistently inactive, Yeldon still evenly split snaps and touches with Grant in Week 15 when Fournette didn't play.

Yeldon's a good change of pace and 3rd down RB, but he just doesn't fit the mold of what Marrone and Hackett want in a starting running-back; they want up-the-gut power-runners. Neither Yeldon nor Grant fit that bill, so people should expect the Jags to add some RBs in this draft. Probably not Day 2, but Day 3, sure.

He should fit well in that system. If Shady goes down, he could have some value.

You can bet Buffalo addresses RB in the draft. They do have a lot of need though, so maybe they'll wait until Day 3. Maybe.

Regardless, I think I underestimated the level of interest Ivory had in free-agency. 3.25 million guaranteed isn't nothing. He's likely to make the 53.

Shocked the hell out of me that he got signed so quick.

He's an upgrade from Tolbert--a better, more dynamic short yardage back who has starter chops if injury forces it. He doesn't make sense for a lot of teams at this point of his career but I like him in Buffalo.

So, what were Karlos Williams', Mike Gillislee's, and Jonathan Williams' respective values previously in this role? Ivory is obviously a lot older, but so is Shady and Ivory has at least done it in the past.

Even as a McCoy owner, I wouldn't pay more than a 3rd to buy Ivory.

Oh yeah, I'm not buying. Just saying it's a decent real life fit.

Just seems like a hefty chunk of change to give a soon-to-be 30-year-old RB that doesn't play special-teams, has trouble staying healthy, and disappointed with his previous team. I'm guessing Buffalo reviewed his Jax tape, and decided he played better than his stats indicate. PFF's grade trashed Ivory in '17, though.
