Lookback: Most pivotal decision of 2017

Postby jomaed » Mon Feb 05, 2018 7:17 pm

What was the biggest decision you made during the 2017 season and how did it turn out? Mine was trading for Gurley week 7.

Give: Clement & 3 1sts (knew none would be late)
Get: Gurley & Fitz

The good - I went on to win the championship
The bad - The picks ended up being 1.01, 1.03, 1.05

It was a very difficult decision at the time because I knew all the picks would be early, but I decided to make my move. The throw in of Fitz actually turned out to be big for me as well. I believe I would take the pick side now that the season is over, but the trade won me the championship, so no regrets.

I took over an orphan in a 16 team idp, after 7 games, i had been really lucky 6-1 or something like that but almost 300 points behind the scoring leader, so i threw this offer out (and it was accepted)

my 1st 2nd 3rd, to the guy who was in last
for Cam Newton (fa end of year) alex collins (2yr) and keenan allen (2 yr) along with his 5th 6th 7th
I came in second - got gurley'd

bad : in my 32 team single player pool salary cap i had been 10-6 and lost in the quarter finals last 2 years, i needed offensive help, and idealy on longer cheap contracts
Gave 1.16 1.20 1.24
for J Crowder (5 yr contract at 0.3% of cap) and ameer abdulah at 4.6% of cap
well i ended up being 12th in points scored, but was unlucky in who i played finishing 7-9
PPR IDP Contract Cap:
ConF (16 Team)
DAF (16 team)
DW2- Co-Commish (16 Team)

Those three picks are about equal to Gurley to me-- but you won the Championship, so you definitely won the trade! I also made a trade for Gurley:

Gave: Jordy, McCoy, a 1st (turned out to be 1.12)
Got: Gurley, AJG

This was week one of the 2017 season. The other owner was horrified at the Bengals offense, and down on Gurley after 2016. Gurley had also just averaged 2.1 ypc on 19 attempts, against a bad Colts defense.

The league (myself included) considered it about an even trade at the time, and a safer deal for the other guy (who was in win now mode). We actually faced each other in the playoffs... and Gurley flew me through the championship.

12-team SF, PPR, TE premium, 0.25 PPCarry

I overpaid for Gronk right before the last week of our regular season, but he brought me to the championship game, where I negotiated a less severe chop ($700/$500 vs. $1000/$200). Lost in the title game, but still playing with house money for the next three seasons, so I’m happy.

Gave: ARob, 2019 1st, ASJ
Received: Gronk, Rivers, 2019 3rd
Both are 12-team 1QB PPR dynasties

WR: Nuk, Godwin, Cooper, Lockett, Flowers, Chark, Collins, Hollins, Tillman, Tolbert

Taxi: Willis, Z. White, M. Mims, T. Palmer

Hull Awaits
$450 cap, 60 contract years

QB: Lawrence $5/3, Richardson $5/5, Minshew $1/0, Jones $1/0, Heinicke $1/0, Tyrod $1/0
RB: Achane $4/4, Warren $2/4, Roschon $7/5, Dillon $4/1, Hubbard $2/1, Kelley $1/0

Closing up shop after arob, Woodhead, sproles and obj went down and Julio was doing nothing during the beginning of the season. I ended up trading Julio, Chris Thompson, and Smallwood for DJ. I played the we like a beast (picked up Collins, McKinnon, Lee, Rudolph, doyle, Alex smith) traded smith for Tevin Coleman, the Coleman for 1.07, still made the playoffs (got seventh place) then traded Lee, Crowell, and Collins for 1.04

Now I'm walking into next season with
Obj, Evans, arob, dj, 2 top 10 TEs, and 2 top 7 rookies
12 Team 1 ppr .1 points per carry
Garbage
QB Jalen Hurts
RB A-train, D'Onta Foreman,Jahmyr Gibbs, JK Dobbins, Rashaad Penny, AJ Dillon, Jerrick McKinnon, Joshua Kelley, TDP, Chase Edmonds, JRob, Zamir White
WR CeeDee Lamb, Justin Jefferson, DJ Moore, Hollywood Brown, Brandin Cooks, Odell Beckham Junior, Marvin Jones, Braxton Berrios, Richie James
TE Dalton Kincaid, Foster Moreau
+2 Flex
1.02, 1.06

Had pick #5 on a rebuilding team. When OTC, all of my 4 top targets were taken and I wasn't thrilled with the remaining "top prospects", so I already considered Kamara there, who sat atop my next tier. But with so many holes to fill, I decided to trade down, then traded down again, and found Kamara still on the board at #12 where I took him. The picks gained by trading down turned into Chris Godwin and (IDP) Zach Cunningham, plus a 2018 2nd rounder.
3x teams in 32-team standard PPR + IDP leagues

It doesn't matter what we want. Once we get it, we want something else.

I 'Earned' the 1.01 pick in 2017 and took Leonard Fournette. Half way through this season my team was still not doing very good because of injuries so I traded Fournette for Zeke (suspended) because the Zeke owner wanted to win now. That helped me earn the 1.01 again this year so now I'll be moving forward with Zeke and Barkley. I consider it a small victory for not being good the past few seasons.

I bought Murray + Crabtree for the 1.08 + Ertz for my PLP below where I have Kelce, Gronk and Ware was healthy. Hunt was taken at 1.08.
Two days after our draft Ware was lost for the year and Hunt. Ertz after years of teasing finally broke out and was retraded during the season for a king's ransom.

While I was the highest scorer in the league I didn't make to the championship and Crab/Murray were duds at the end of season...

In a superflex startup, around the early 4th I think? I was torn between Brady and Wentz. Obviously the GOAT is old, but I was skeptical of Wentz after 2016 and wanted to win now.

Clearly Brady worked out decently this year, but also clearly this was a major loss in the long term.

Expecting Zeke’s suspension a week before he was suspended I traded my 1st rd pick for Mark Ingram to pair with Bell for a playoff push. At the time I was second in my division and looked to be fighting for one of he last two playoff spots. I ended up the 2 seed and landed a bye in the first round. Wound up winning the championship and the pick ended up being 1.12.

best move was trading for Ertz using a 2018 2nd (ended up being 2.12) right before the season

or in another league i got hopkins prior to the season for jordan howard and 2017 2.06

worst move (didnt hurt or help me but i have major sellers remorse) was selling J Gordon and K Drake for C Coleman and M Bryant (did this right as drake had 1 good game one down game and wasn't entrenched in a heavier workload yet and Gordon hadn't played yet)

another bad one that helped me barely miss playoffs was dealing kamara for J Landry right after kamaras first real big game (the 10 catch game week 4 or 5)

My most pivotal decision of 2017 was to go all in for a championship which I won:
-Instead of trading out of my 1.09 for future picks, I drafted K. Hunt.
-Trading a future first for Fitz and Jordy (Fitz was great)
-Trading two 2nds and a 3rd for Baldwin
-Probably most importantly: Trading for Le’Veon to maintain high level RB1 production with news of Zeke’s probable suspension. Zeke, Bell and Hunt look pretty damn good for 2018 as well.

Bad Decisions:
-Trading a 1st and 2nd for Dez as part of my all-in push
-Trading Alex Collins (my RB8 at the time) for what ended up being 2.04. Not because I think this is such a bad trade, but because when I agreed to the deal, I didn’t notice the other trade in my inbox:
Give: Collins and McKinnon
Get: R. Anderson and 2018 1st (ended up 1.02)
