Bills fire OC Dennison and hire Alabama OC Brian Daboll

Postby DJB » Fri Jan 12, 2018 4:51 pm

Surprised no mention yet. Clear indication to me that Bills are moving on from Tyrod.

Bad play calling definitely affected the entire Bills offence. Any new OC coming in is still going to feature Shady but i am hopeful for improved passing game. Benjamin owners should remain hopeful.

Thoughts?

Bills hired Brian Daboll Alabama OC.

I know his background but what about his play calling? Any Bama, Dolphins, Chiefs or Browns fans can chime in on his offence?

Would be very appreciated

Wish I could help but I dont know enough about him. What I do find intriguing is that the Bills have back-to-back picks at 21 & 22.

Im curious too. I dont watch college ball outside of watching incoming rookies. Alabama wasnt really known for their offense though am I correct about that?

Offense was actually really good this year until our QB hit a break wall. Jalen had huge limitations and kind of left Daboll with one hand behind his back. We actually had to play our backup In the championship game which won us the game. Tua is an insanely talented freshman. I actually really liked what I saw in Daboll this year and really wanted him back. Knew that wasn’t happening with all of the NFL turnover though.

Apparently Daboll has been an NFL OC before - 3 brief stints.

Looks like he's mostly a zone blocking guy, which shouldn't surprise coming from Alabama. Probably good news for McCoy. Less good for pretty much anyone else on the offense.

Alabama isn’t a zone blocking team and hasn’t been in quite a while.

I will say our offense was very RPO driven which seems to be the norm for college these days. But again, our playbook has been set and isn’t indicative of what Daboll’s offense may be.

Kiffin is a zone guy, so I'm not sure what you mean by quite a while. You can zone block in an RPO system.

I was going off Daboll's stint in Cleveland when he was making Peyton Hillis a thing in Cleveland with regards to him personally.

Blocking schemes would be determined by the Oline coach and ultimately the desire of the head coach. Kiffin may have done something in prior stints but he didn’t have that type of control at Alabama. That’s my point. But ultimat oh Daboll may instill his own ideas.

Was definitely in a power run offense at Bama. Not sure about his other stops. I have no idea how the NFL world works but college is much different. When we (Alabama) bring in an OC, the general philosophy remains unchanged. The new guy may add some wrinkles but he definitely doesn’t have full control over the offense in terms of general philosophy.

While former offensive coaches Lane Kiffin and Mario Cristobal generally favored the ZBS, there were times late in the season when Alabama went old school, mostly when battering ram Bo Scarbrough was in the game. Below is the first touchdown of the Peach Bowl and man, is it sexy. This is a basic “off-tackle” lead play, by definition designed to run off the outside hip of the offensive tackle, in this case Cam Robinson. At the handoff, note that the linemen have fired off the ball and Bo’s pads are square to the line of scrimmage. He is looking at the back of O.J. Howard, his lead blocker, and Robinson has pummeled the defensive end inside.

That’s all fairly impressive, but it’ll be interesting to see how it comes together. Alabama has predominantly been a zone blocking team that uses the throw only to open up the running game. It might be different now.

A quick google search can provide additional references that state the same. Pretty much all articles that come up are before Daboll took over, so I can't verify that they still use zone, but they all pretty much agree that Alabama was predominantly a zbs team.
