It was pretty recent. I almost wonder if his initial pondering of retirement was a ploy to get Haley fired. I had seen a lot of rumours indicating they didn't get along over the last couple years. Ben said nothing about continuing to play until just the other day, which likely would've been after the decision was made to let Haley move on.

Le'Veon Bell tells ESPN the player and Steelers are not coming to "a number we both agree on," wants a deal strictly based on his value to his team. Stresses not bluffing on retirement.

He sounds like he's willing to be a martyr for the RB cause. I dont know if I'd completely write off his retirement talk as posturing.

I understand you're taking on more long-term risk that way, but the salaries that come with that tag are awesome. Kirk Cousins getting the tag multiple times was the best thing that could've happened to him financially. It's like a small signing bonus, and then when you finally hit free agency you get a big signing bonus.
There’s a reason why teams love franchise tags and it’s not bc players are getting the better end of the deal. Cousins is the most outlier situation ever. It hurts my brain when people think like this.

He's not retiring and walking away from that money. Nonsense.

He's trying to reset the rb pay scale.
In too many leagues to list players. Check out my Dynasty Deep Dive!

I really hope the Steelers give him what he wants. Trying to trade him for 1.01 straight up cuz of his past workload. All this talk is hurting my chances for sure, although that could change immediately if he is re-signed. I gave a pretty nice haul to acquire him last offseason but I did win it all, so I can’t be too upset.

I still think its extremely slim that he does it, somewhere between 2 and 5% chance, but if anyone is crazy enough to actually follow through on it its Bell

It's like you said. He doesn't just want the money for his own pocket. He wants the money to recognize that RBs do so, so much more than they used to and after a 4-5 year rookie contract don't have near as long as a WR to make the big bucks they deserve

Calvin Johnson retired w/ a lot more than $15m remaining on his contract

IMO, Bell should have held out last year as long as possible and gotten the min amount of games played to accrue a season. They rode him HARD last year. Based on his usage, I thought for sure it was a 'use em and abuse em' situation and they'd let him hit FA like the Cowboys did w/ Murray a few years back.
