Looking Ahead to 2020 - QBS Part I

Postby ArrylT » Sat Jan 06, 2018 2:18 pm

Looking ahead more than 2.5 years to the start of the 2020 season - so Sept 2020 (2 years 8 months) which of the following Quarterbacks do you believe will still be in the NFL. Keeping in mind the expected influx of the 2018 class, and then 2 more classes after that:

I do not mean which will still have fantasy value - just which of them do you feel will be on NFL Teams either as a starter or a backup (not practice squad or FA wanting to be on roster).

Pick as many or as few options as you wish. You can change your vote if other owners comments convince you to do so - but honesty and admitting a vote change would be appreciated.

All QBs are at least 30.

Sorry if I spelled a name wrong.

I think it's Rivers, and Brees for sure. I could definitely see Alex Smith staying around, even in a backup role, but will probably be a starter somewhere, and Bradford too (he just keeps going places and being just valuable enough to keep around)

those are the only 4 I think will still be around.

I would say Bradford (as a backup), Rivers (stil in LA), Brees (still in NO...for a final year) and Alex Smith (backup in KC/starter elsewhere). I see all Fitzpatrick, McCown, Brady, Eli and Big Ben retiring after 2019 at the latest. Rest should be out of a role if not retired (Cutler, Hoyer, Stanton).

But i won't bet on my predictions :)

Who's in? Alex Smith is the easy yes in this group. Bradford will likely still be fighting his knee to a draw, but will still be on a roster. I suspect Fitz & Hoyer will still be banging about as backups. I think Eli will be taking his final run as a starter by this point.

Who's out? I suspect Brees, Brady & McCown will have aged out by then. Cutler is too proud to take a backup role and not good enough to continue much longer as anything more than an emergency replacement. Stanton's survived this long by knowing Arians system and with Arians retirement, he'll be lucky to have a job next year. Big Ben is already discussing retirement. I suspect he'll be out in a couple years.
All I Der Is Win - 16 Team IDP League (Pass TD 6pts)

QB - Stafford, Stroud, Tune
RB - Swift, Hall, Penny, Bigsby, Ford
WR - Pittman, Olave, Di. Johnson, G. Wilson, J. Williams, Metchie, Robinson, M. Wilson
TE - Okonkwo, Schoonmaker
LB - Brooks, R. Smith, Phillips
DL - Crosby, Allen, Simmons
DB - D. James, Baker, Delpit

I think Alex Smith will be somewhere and Hoyer probably drifts around the league in a backup role, maybe in NE for awhile since they traded their entire depth chart away and he knows the system.

Rivers has a chance to be around 2020, I think it's his last year if he is. I could also see Ryan Fitzpatrick floating around a couple more years if he's not getting enough playing time to show he's washed.

Ben has already floated the idea of retirement the last couple years and has taken a beating. Eli is winding down and will be too proud to be a backup, Stanton is trash and lost his biggest supporter in Arians. Cutler is done. Sam Bradford's knee is done.

Mccown, Brees and Brady are at that age where QBs fall off a cliff so I expect them to be done pretty soon. Mccown once again proved he can't stay healthy and Brees numbers declined this year.

I gave Alex Smith, Rivers, Fitzpatrick and Hoyer checkmarks.

In case you're wondering why the time frame - I did it for a couple of reasons

(a) its in that 3 year window a lot of owners like to use for their dynasty teams

(b) Brady has said 5 years / 45 and this would have him just after his 43rd birthday

(c)it will be more fun to revisit after a couple of years than if I did it just for the start of 2018 or 2019.

I say only Alex Smith. Bradford's future is highly doubtful given his injury history. Rivers takes a lot of hits and it wouldn't surprise me if he retired early.

Not many that's for sure, but I could be wrong. Alex Smith is young enough to still be around. Maybe Brees still has it in him, but can see all the rest having hit retirement. Bradford totally dependent on his health which is hard to predict, so went in favour of retirement

Alex Smith shouldn't even be on this list imo. Interesting to think about nonetheless though. (Cutler, Fitz, Ben, Eli, McCown were the only ones I didn't check btw).

He's on this list in part because he's going behind Patrick Mahomes in startups now (even 1 QB) and because he's Alex Smith and because of the speculation about him leaving the Chiefs. He turns 34 in May, which makes him 36 in Sept 2020 (Jay Cutler is only 34).

Brees, Rivers, Smith are the three I feel most confident about.

I know Brady says he's going to play well into his 40's, but I thought his play looked to be slipping in 2017. I'm not sure the organization will let him keep the reigns that long. Poor play, or injury may force him out before 2020.

Edit: Just clicked "submit" and am surprised at all the Bradford voted. I seriously doubt his knee issues will allow him to continue playing another three seasons.

Yeah you're right - I forgot that his knee issues were more troublesome than originally expected - so I've swapped out my vote for Bradford to Big Ben - and not just because I felt bad he wasnt getting any love. Maybe if they win one this year he'll think about going for a 4th ring?

Alex Smith is a young 33 by NFL QB standards and while he may not be a Chief next year there will be a team very happy to pay him a lot of money to play a long time after what he did this year.

Its going to be interesting to find out who will still be here thats for sure - and I have to admit I am not surrpised by how little belief there is in certain QBs.

Assuming everyone that has voted has voted for Alex Smith, then there seems like less than 10% (5/57) believe that Big Ben will still be playing and barely more than 25% feel Brady can live up to his plan to play until 45. Of course Brady has made a career of being the king of the Chip on the Shoulder - so the more that people disbelieve in him, the more he is going to be driven to succeed I would assume ...

As there have been ZERO votes for Jay Cutler, and because Case Keenum is (a) turning 30 and (b) garnering a ton of discussion I've added him to the list (I figure he'll quickly zoom up the "charts").
