Thielen 2.0

Postby jman3134 » Sat Jan 06, 2018 8:58 am

Anybody have any thoughts on Brandon Zylstra? Worth a flyer? Has the requisite size and athleticism, and led the CFL in receiving last year.

Honestly have not heard of him. What are the similarities to Thielen? I do not see a huge correlation between leading the CFL and being a good player from some podunk school in MN. I assume he is a cracker and you are highlighting the under the radar aspects of where they both played to pair with his physical traits.

Edit:* Cracka, took off the "er" so it is not offensive any longer...

Not really interested unless a super deep league. It's SOOOO freaking rare that someone makes the leap from CFL to NFL and actually sticks on a roster, let alone produces for fantasy.

Both are good players from Podunk Minnesota schools, share an agent now and working out together this offseason. We will see, but he has a good shot in my mind given that he came from a small school and only played two years in the CFL. While there isn't much precedent, Zylstra had a historically great 2nd season in the CFL. Barring injury, he was on pace for the all time yards mark.

It is doubtful that he got much opportunity coming from a D3 school, but it seems the NFL has been giving him workouts(Vikings, Lions, Cardinals etc). Not a horrible flyer in my mind, but we will see.

I agree with this.

Thielen played four years at a Division II school and went undrafted. The Vikings cut him once and signed him to the PS when nobody claimed him. He was a special teamer for two seasons before blowing up in 2016 and becoming a stud in 2017.

In short, Thielen is an anomaly. There is no formula for anomalies. Don't chase them. You will only find them by pure tripped on a rock, fell into mud and landed on $100...luck. Maybe this CFL guy is the next Thielen, but the odds are incredibly stacked against it.

If I had to bet on him being anyone's 2.0 it would be Duron Carter. He is on my radar, but in the "flyers to take after reloading my IDP's" tier.

I'm not even expecting Thielen to hold value, I am betting on a slump for him next year.

Without checking, I'm going to assume he's white based on the title of the thread.

I am a Thielan owner and believer, but this is insane.

Update: far from a roster lock, Zylstra is competing and impressing the coaches.
