Sometimes you have to wonder...

Postby Cult of Dionysus » Thu Dec 14, 2017 2:43 pm

So Joe Mixon got knocked the f*** out last week, clearly with a substantial concussion. He was a high draft pick in 2017, regarded as one of the best RBs from the 2017 class, and is only 21 years old. The Cincinnati Bengals are out of the playoff picture and there's absolutely no reason why the team should rush Mixon back to action. Yet there's a very real possibility they will play him.

WTF?

:wall:

Sometimes I do not understand what front offices and coaching staffs are thinking. Same goes with rushing JJ Watt back to action after he had back surgery or the Patriots calling QB sneaks in games were the team has a solid lead and need not risk the health of TB12. Just a couple of examples there... but I probably could come up with dozens.

I can't explain every situation and there are plenty of decisions I will not understand either, but the Mixon situation doesn't surprise me. The Bengals aren't (yet) eliminated from the playoffs. They need to win out and get help but the chance is still there. Marvin Lewis is also likely losing his job at the end of the year. If that possibility exists that they can get to the post season, I suspect he is going to take whatever the necessary risks are to get there and hang onto his job.
If you can't leave at least a 20% tip, you can't afford to eat out.

That and players are just always hurt. If they always waited until they were "healthy" they'd never be on the field.

True. And players always want to play and push to play (whether it's because they want to play or just hit some mark in their contract and get paid)...so it becomes harder not to play them when they're "medically cleared."

Bengals are 5-8 and in 12 spot in the AFC. They are out. Not mathematically, but realistically.

Again, Mixon is one of their bright young stars. And he just got Mike Tysoned. No sense rushing him back. I get that most players are dealing with injuries. But there's stuff you can play through and stuff you want to let heal. Why risk his career.

RBs are treated as cannon fodder though. Look at how Bell had been used this season, Steelers have run him into the ground.

If Mixon is cleared then he’s healthy enough to play. You don’t sit him ‘just because we worry about you.’ If he’s not clear, you don’t play him. He hasn’t reached star status yet, even if fantasy owners love him. He’s not AJG to shut down and be super safe. He’s a young guy who still has more to show them.

‘Not mathematically, but realistically’ is not eliminated, and teams don’t just give up because chances are slim. How does it look to players and the example it sets when you just decide to quit early? Or ‘protect’ a relatively unproven rookie from the field when it isn’t required? I’m sure people will feel a lot better if they finish 8-8 with a 3 game win streak than 5-11 going down in tank mode.

Sometimes you have to wonder if fantasy owners can truly appreciate all the variables (obviously not). So much more to everything than arbitrary decisions based on nothing.

I agree with the RB comment...AJG could have come back last year but they kept him off the field when they were out of it.
