To declare, or not to declare? - Saquon Barkley

Postby Bot101 » Fri Dec 08, 2017 5:07 pm

Just googled Barkley to see if he has declared for the NFL draft, and apparently hes waiting till after his bowl game Dec 30th. What are the chances he stays in school compared to declaring for the 2018 NFL draft? Im sure a lot of owners of the 1.01 here fought to get that pick. Is anyone nervous he stays in school another year?

He would be dumb to stay in school (from a football career perspective). His draft stock will never be higher (unless injury/off field issues arise between now and the draft). If he stays another year, he is risking injury for no reason. He can always go back to school and get his degree if that is an issue. No reason for him to stay another year unless somehow his draft stock plummets before this April/May.

I assume he's waiting to make sure he doesn't suffer some catastrophic injury and his draft stock plummets before he declares. Aside from that it's gotta be close to 100% he's coming out.

I would be absolutely SHOCKED if he stayed in school. This isn't a Chubb situation where he was injured and stayed to try to boost his draft stock... he is head and shoulders above everyone else at RB.

What does he benefit playing in the bowl game then? Why risk everything?

Honestly, he shouldn't. And if the NCAA is going to pass off the idea that it's OK not to pay these guys because they're getting the exposure they need to make money in the draft, then they shouldn't be surprised when guys stop playing once they've maxed that exposure out.

It would be one thing if they were in the CFB playoff. But no one cares about the Fiesta Bowl.

He would be the worst business man ever if he didnt declare (unless he tears everything in both knees and get arthritis in both hands before the draft) tbh he shouldn't do anything from now until the draft other than interviews. No bowl game, no combine, no pro day, nothing at visits with teams, no strenuous exercise. Bubble wrap suits everywhere, insurance, anything an everything under the sun to prevent injury

RB is the one position where you have to declare early if you get a positive draft grade. Rookie salary cap means the odometer has already been running and you want to get to your 2nd contract with as little wear as possible. Why add another 300+ touches for free in college? Too much risk to go back.

I would even applaud if he skips the bowl game like Fournette did.

Yep, players are getting wise and starting to skip these bowl games. Jaylon Smith is a prime example of why NOT to play in a meaningless bowl game.

FWIW Guice has not officially declared either and is waiting until after his bowl game. They have nothing to gain by declaring now and then suffering an injury in their bowl games. A bowl game injury or a bad decision to stay by both or either of these guys would be catestrophic for early rookie draft pick holders however unlikely

Barkley will be a Top 3-4 pick in this draft. There's no way he's not declaring.

Ok bowl game in the books. Either he is really not leaning towards declaring or staying in school, or he's a phenomenal salesman. In the post game interviews he seems like he has truly not decided yet. Start the clock till he makes his decision known? I personally am very nervous... I made a ton of moves to position myself into acquiring him.

Maybe he realizes that all of the teams that are in position to draft him are ugly, ugly spots. lol

To all of you wondering why high profile players play in "meaningless" bowl games, it's because some of these players actually give a bleep about their teammates, coaches, organization, and pride. Football is not just a sport or business to these guys, in some cases it's all they have.

Barkley will declare. Could legit go no. 1 being that no qb is separating themselves and there are 5-7 decent ones the browns can take with their Houston pick.

*Josh Rosen will be the only successful qb in this draft.
