Evan Engram in 2018

Postby waynesworld1234 » Wed Nov 08, 2017 1:13 pm

How does the community view Engram in 2018 with Beckham back? Is he still a 7-12 target a game guy or does his role diminish a bit?

I still see him as a 6-10 target per game player next year. I think he will stick as the #2 option on that offense which would put him in the TE5-TE10 range depending who the Giants have at QB next year.

Hey, I think it's obvious that Beckham and Landry would love to be teammates again.

On the bright side...your boy Parker would have some shadow removed allowing a little more of the spotlight to fall on him.

Just thought of something random...how perfect would Landry be with Brady? I have put about 20 seconds thought into this...but it seems like a great fit for his free agency possibilities.

Didn't Welker come from Miami too? The Dolphins would love that.

As a fit it would make sense - money wise and practicality, not so sure.

Engram is on pace for 126 targets, as a rookie "TE." For comparison, only one TE has 100 targets or more in his rookie season: Jeremy Shockey. Engram's pace would be two targets below his record.

Engram's usage is dependent on a few things:

1. Is Eli Manning the Giants QB next season?
2. OBJ returns and is usually a target hog.

He's a good player, but I don't see him maintaining the 8 targets (7.8) per game he's at right now.

So, his production is a bad thing...?

I totally get that you're saying he's due for regression and he IS, but what if he's also a fantastic talent, and maybe the next really good receiver?

Engram is a good player. I am surprised he's been so good so soon. I'm not saying it's a bad thing he's producing. I'm just saying that his usage will diminish some when the Giants get healthier next season. Also, it's fair to wonder if Eli will be starting next season. The Giants are going have a Top 3-5 pick in this draft and Eli Manning turns 37 in a few months.

I've been yelling it all year. Everyone keeps talking about Landry being a UFA as a big negative on his value. Why is it a negative that he could get out of the worst offense in football? Yeah it would suck if he lands on the Browns, but that seems less likely than the Pats. Julian Edelman will be 32 coming off an ACL injury next year (and those ACL injuries aren't usually next year type things for these shifty slot guys...look at Welker the year after his ACL) and the Pats have a history of poaching WRs from division rivals and then destroying them with those guys.

Engram is getting good YAC but not a lot of red zone looks, mostly short passes, and he has a low catch rate. Long-term potential is there, but I actually think he's overvalued right now. The 2018 situation is bound to get worse, whether it be OBJ and Marshall returning or Manning retiring. I think 2018 will be his worst year.

I mean it's inevitable for him to regress from his numbers this year. OBJ back and he loses a lot of targets. But, it could also open it up for him more. Right now, they have to force him the ball and he catches most. Teams will eventually figure him out to an extent and begin to gameplan, doesn't mean he'll lose all value, again, regress.

I think the biggest variable that scares people is that rookie TE's aren't supposed to produce like this. But he is. He is also not a traditional TE and can't block for bleep. But oh man does he have a nose for the football. You're telling me any TE can make of what he has in the situation? Nope. Frankly, I almost passed on him in our rookie draft after he fell to the middle of the second, but glad I did not.
