I did a startup 3 years ago and I believe the only player I have left from my original draft is Eifert. I had Julio up until a few months ago.
The "I will own him for the next 10 years!" narrative isn't quite right, it's more "this player will hold substantial value for the next 10 years".

Since 2011. Startup drafted Big Ben, JStew, Antonio Brown, Witten, Geno Atkins, and Malcolm Jenkins in my sig IDP league in 2011 and still own them, 7 seasons later. Their value has peaked, so I probably will own them until they retire.

I have been doing this too long and have too many teams to actually remember which players I have held on to the longest. In addition --a good number of the teams I have i took over because an owner abandoned them. That being said I have a small (10 team) league that I have been in for feels like 10 years and I have Forte on that team--and I believe I have had him from the beginning--

My first "real" dynasty startup draft was in May 2010
I still have Brees (round 2) and Lesean (round 3).
Round 1 was andre Johnson. I held him till the end.
Round 4 was Vernon Davis, who found his way back onto my roster this year to handcuff Reed
