Washington Redskins Offense - rest of season

Postby ArrylT » Fri Oct 20, 2017 10:21 am

Perhaps one of the more underlooked stories so far (imho) due to things like Elliot suspension, injuries, Amari Cooper, etc is the lack of help the Redskins players have been providing re: fantasy value.

Not only has it been pretty ugly at RB, not a single WR/TE in Washington has 30 targets yet. Ok they've only played 5 games due to an early bye week, but no player is averaging above 6 targets per game

About the only fantasy relevant player (excluding Cousins as a high end QB2) has been Chris Thompson doing his best version of Darren Sproles / Reggie Bush and how long can that last?

Plenty of people were on the Jamison Crowder bandwagon in the pre-season. Except that was always predicated on the assumption that he was going to see lots of targets.

Well he isnt a poor mans Randall Cobb much less a poor mans Jarvis Landry at the moment. Heck Landry actually has games with more targets than Crowder has all season*.

Has anyone seen anything to suggest any player is going to grab a bigger share of the run game or more targets in the passing game?

Or will it be Chris Thompson and hope for the best ...

* - not exactly true but still funny.

Yeah - it is not as if the Redskins offense is bad - its just that it isnt good enough to support so much spread out targets unlike in NE or NO. If they could get closer to 30 ppg than 20 ppg ...

Cousins is QB6 by points per game (he's had a bye).

Last year Garcon had 19% of targets, Jackson had 17%, Crowder had 17%, Reed had 15%, Thompson had 10%, Davis had 10%.
So far this season Pryor has 18%, Thompson has 16%, Crowder has 15%, Reed has 15%, Ryan Grant has 13%, Davis had 9%.

They have always spread the ball around, this is one of the things Cousins excels at. Crowder and Reed are both getting targets but they are both down significantly in their yards per reception. Crowder's YAC is still good but he's been getting short passes compared to last year. Pryor isn't nearly as efficient as either Jackson or Garcon was. They're running the ball more but not as effectively, partly because Perine isn't doing well compared to Matt Jones.

I see the problems as Perine and Pryor. Pryor has the same YPC and catch rate as he did in Cleveland, but he won't get the same volume (ever again. Sell him.) Garcon and DeSean Jackson were both significantly more effective with their targets. I don't know if Crowder's usage will change, but Reed becoming healthy might free him up for some longer targets. I don't see Chris Thompson getting less targets as effective as he has been, though it's amazing that a RB has 19 yards per reception. I don't know if he can keep that up but I don't think anyone else on the team can do it.

Do we think Doctson will develop into a viable option?

I'm sure everyone already knows, but a definite change has happened this week. Doctson was in for 84% of snaps compared to Pryor's 47%. Also Perine wasn't used at all. This is consistent with what I said the problem was in my post above. Reed is back to being a stud. None of this helped Crowder, though he played 91% of snaps. I think the offense is improving but I wouldn't trust any of the WRs unless Doctson steps it up in the coming weeks. Pryor owners should panic.

Heard through several podcasts getting ready for W8, that the Redskins feel that Doctson and Pryor are both "X" receivers .. So in the first half they didn't play on the field together .. during the 2nd half they did .. I think they want Doctson to take over the "X" and be the guy in WSH ..

Cousins is actually QB6 right now (mid-range QB1). That's amazing considering the Redskins currently don't have a WR or TE with 300 yards receiving or more through 6 games.

I don't think there's a safe bet for the rest of the season. Jordan Reed showed signs of life towards the end of the Eagles game. Doctson looks like he's going to get more work. Crowder has been very disappointing despite being on field more than any other Redskins WR. It seems they're just going to keep spreading the ball around.
