Cooks actually is not a very good short/intermediate route runner, despite having great short area burst. His route running just hasn't improved. Look at his Reception Perception numbers from 2016:

Image

Cooks is only at or above the NFL average on 9 routes, post routes and flat. To top it off, he just doesn't do a good job of beating NFL DB's:

Below average vs. press, man, double and zone.

He's still a hell of a talent, but it's clear that he serves 1 purpose in New England's offense and that's to stretch the field. BB won't reinvent the wheel with players. He will use you to your strengths and that's it.

I maintain that Cooks could absolutely finish a season as the WR1, ala Antonio Brown, IF he gets the volume. Unfortunately teams are just using him to stretch the field, but I think he's so much more than that.
12 Team IDP PPR Superflex Dynasty: 1-2 QB, 1-6 RB/WR/TE (7 total), PK, PN, 2DL, 3LB, 2DB.

QB - Richardson, Purdy, Love, Z Wilson
RB - Hall, K Williams, Warren, Edwards, Perine
WR - Lamb, Jeudy, Nacua, Eli Moore, Bateman, Meyers, Downs
TE - Gesicki, Njoku, Kincaid, Smith Jr
DL - Garrett, Burns, Rousseau, Phillips
LB - Q Walker, Al-Shaair, Alexander, Grugier-Hill
DB - Bates, Dugger, A Hooker, K Wallace

That's kind of the problem. He's not Antonio Brown, or anything close skill wise. Volume isn't the problem. Cooks needs to improve his overall route running ability to become a legitimate #1.

Despite this, Cooks has finished with two WR1 seasons. His big play potential is as big as any WR in the league. So, even though he isn't a complete route runner or separation talent, he is still good enough to produce at a high level in fantasy.

This offseasons prized pet

Not sure what people expected. Saints do this same thing and he was up and down then too. NE won't force feed anyone, cooks is far from an exception.

Now imagine if Edelman was healthy.

Interesting. As a new owner that's a pretty decent post Pats landing spot.

I just traded Crabtree/1.04 for Cooks in one of my leagues, I’m not sure if this is good or bad. As far as Gronk goes, for what it’s worth, I just read that multiple teams are preparing offers for him, we’ll see if anything happens out of that, it should get interesting here in a couple of weeks.

I doubt it. He's not gonna play for unless he gets paid. Pats don't pay.
