Discuss.

Actually not a terrible recoup of lost investment for the Colts. Brissett was a 3rd-round pick, Dorsett was a 1st round pick with a 2nd round grade on most team boards. Brissett probably spiked his value a bit after looking so sharp in that preseason game the other night. And boy do the Colts clearly need a reliable backup for Luck these days, near term and probably long term.

I mean, Dorsett represents a wasted pick by Grigson fer shur, but I would've expected Dorsett to be dumped for a Day 3 pick, and instead they got something that might actually prove pretty valuable to them in the future.

That's a really bad sign for the Colts that they just bailed on a 1st round WR... looks like Luck's 'young years' continue to be wasted by incompetent GM-ing.

Grigson picked Dorsett. This is a Chris Ballard move.

Anyway. Do we really believe Dorsett can turn his career around with the Patriots? Their offense is notoriously difficult to learn, and now Dorsett will have to do it with no offseason. I'm guessing he won't do much this year, even with Edelman out.

My first reaction when I learned of the trade was that Luck's shoulder is further away and/or more serious than what has been relayed to the public. Secondly, I am very puzzled by what this means for the Pats. If they planned to move on from Brady after this year, it seems they would have kept Brissett as the backup. If they plan to trade away Garoppolo, again would they not keep Brisset as the future backup? I am assuming they are going to try to afford to franchise Garoppolo and then move on from Brady in two years...?

It is theoretically possible that the Patriots believe Brady can play as long as he says he can?

Considering how ruthless Bill Belichick is... dare we contemplate the seemingly unthinkable: that he'll actually release Brady next year to re-sign Jimmy G as the starter?

Understood, but I was trying to say (and not well) was that it is becoming clear that anything from the Grigson era is being admitted as a mistake and that they are basically starting over from everything that was done from 2012-2016. Unfortunate for Luck...

Endorsement for Dorsett but makes you wonder about the value of Amendola and Hogan who were the assumed next man up.

I've always wondered how the Brady-Belichick era would end... if Brady would walk off into the sunset of his own accord, if B would trade him (heaven forbid) because he is past his prime, or if he would be forced out. I'm grabbing my popcorn...

They still seem high on Moncrief, at least. I expect that to change instantly next offseason if Moncrief doesn't breakout this year, though.

The Pats are so enigmatic with how they run things that I could see Dorsett being their WR2 or completely irrelevant. I'm holding for now, but I feel like the latter will be the most likely scenario.

The Belichick era's success-rate with free-agent WR acquisitions is slightly better than their draft-history at the position, at least.

Dorsett's could only do go routes and run after the catch in college, and maybe find open field in zone coverage, but that's it. His progression with route running was improving last year, and I think the Colts gave up too early on this one.

Not saying Dorsett is going to do anything in NE, but he is going into his 3rd season, traditionally the one where WRs end up putting it together. There's potential here.

I'm surprised by some of the comments in this thread regarding Brady. I've never expected anything other than him to play out his entire career with the Patriots at the starter and that probably means another 3 years.

This move really seems like nothing more than belichek capitalizing on the value of one of his backup quarterbacks who is not going to do anything else where in the NFL.

I agree that this could affect Amendola and/or Hogan. In reality, they swapped out Julian for cooks and neither of the two did much last year. Not that I habe huge faith in Dorsett, but ya never know.
