Charles Sims Discussion

Postby Confined1 » Wed Aug 23, 2017 7:24 am

I think this guy is being severely underrated, what do you guys think? It's confirmed that he's to be the pass catching specialist/3rd down back this year, in a very very talented TB offense

I think he's a jag and they drafted direct competition for him.

Who exactly "confirmed" this role for him? All I found was a beat writer who said he "expects" this to be his role.

If he can claim this role, he surely can be useful in FF, at least this year. But I don't see anything special or long-term value about him, unless some team with a huge need at RB signs him to a big contract next year.

I would feel much better about Sims if say he overtook Jacquizz for the start during Doug's suspension, but .. he hasn't and probably won't ..

I think that alone gives a good perspective on his potential, we usually like targeting depth guys that in case of injury or suspension, that become league winners, and he is obviously not that..

However, he has had a good camp and its becoming clear he will make the roster again this year (was in doubt earlier) .. Bucs look like they are keeping Martin, Jacquizz, Sims, and Barber .. and McNichols appears to be headed to the Practice Squad (if you have seen hard knocks you can tell he isn't ready at all, struggling with the playbook) ..

..and I really like Barber, he does everything well, including pass pro .. if there is a guy who could eventually unseat anyone, I'd place a bet on him, but wouldn't go all in..

Agree with Plank.
Sims is a decent add to the back of a roster right now. At the moment it is speculation what the TB backfield is going to do for the first 3 weeks. The assumption is that Quizz gets the majority of the work. But, we could very well discover during week 1 that Sims is getting 15 to 20 total touches per game.

Sims is cheap and could be a reasonable play for a couple of weeks. After Doug returns ... well, we know what Sims does when Martin is active.

Even if Sims had 15-20 touches in week 1...would you feel comfortable starting him in week 2?
I'm running under the assumption that they will ride the hot hand in that backfield.

LOL ... no I wouldn't. But if I'm looking at Sims caliber players, then I'm probably not comfortable with very many guys on my roster.

Thing is, Quizz and MicNichols are also quite good passing-down RBs. Quizz in particular annually earns an elite pass-protection grade.

Sims is a specialist at a job for which TB has other quality options, options that seem to be better ball-carriers than Sims, and thus would make the offense less predictable pre-snap on those passing-downs. When Martin comes back from suspension and presumably retakes the starting job, it's plausible Quizz takes over the passing-down job near completely, and Sims is relegated to only a few snaps per game and special-teams.

Of course, this scenario relies on the presumption that the '16 edition of Quizz Rodgers -- which performed and graded very well as a 3-down RB -- will reappear in '17. No one had seen that version of Quizz since his Oregon State days, so, it's possible it was a one-off or something. Or maybe he's the new Justin Forsett. I dunno, we'll find out Weeks 1 - 3.

In terms of running back's catching the ball, I think Sims is within the top five of the NFL. I think he maintains a very solid role on this offense. I am in no way saying he will be a RB2 this year, however, I have no issues putting him into the starting lineup when I need him in a pinch. I have tried to move him in one of my leagues, and right now he is only worth a bag of used hockey pucks… For that price I am more than willing to keep him.

Top 5 is a reach. Just off the top of my head: Bell, DJ, Freeman, Duke, Woodhead, Riddick, Shady, Sproles, Vereen, White, Gio, Jamaal all better / more proven RB receivers that have great route-craft in addition to their hands, and the multi-year pro production that proves it. That's 12 guys already. If CMC's profile hype pans out, he'd make 13.

I'd say Sims is top 15-20, with the potential to rise if he ever gets the opportunity that he got in '15 again. Right now I put Sims somewhere in the second tier with guys like Spencer Ware, Andre Ellington, TyMont, Jalen Richard, DeAndre Washington. Quizz himself is in the same tier, based on his body of work in Atlanta (with Koetter).

But you're still thinking in 2015 terms, when Sims had just about no competition for the passing-down role behind Martin, and he still had the HC who drafted him. Things have changed since then, needless to say.

All right....you got me. I was three IPA's deep when I wrote that last night. I do, however, put him in your top tier of receiving backs. I feel like a lot of these backs receive 4 yard dump-offs and accumulate yards in open space. I guess what I was getting at was that it seems like Sims is asked to run more routes out of the backfield than some of the others on that list. I see him running a lot of drag, out, and curl routes. He shows to be a very good route runner, when asked to do so.

I guess I am not quite as sure as others that his situation has actually changed since 2015. The depth chart is more cluttered, but I feel that he keeps and maintains that 3rd down role, assuming he stays healthy, even when Martin returns. I thought Martin was a dumpster fire last year, Rodgers was a career 3.5 YAC guy before last year, and I truly believe that McNichols is just a guy.

I actually hope that he finds his way to a better situation next year, as it looks as if he is a UFA after this year.

This. Everybody looks good when playing PPR and catching dump offs (Sims in 2015). But when you actually look at NFL talent, Sims comes up short.

if you like sims, now is the time to take a shot on him. he's basically free and there is nothing but opportunity in front of him. sure there is opportunity to fail..but we can guess that he will get a look from the staff in the first few weeks. if he doesnt catch on...its time to let go and move on. if something does develop....you just picked up a piece you've like for a few years for pennies.

he's in his prime, opportunity has presented itself.....he's the exact type of flier that im looking for when it comes to buying. we could go on for days about players that were nabbed for a 3rd on back or a ww claim.

the rb discussion ultimately comes down to who can carry a 3 down load if its presented to them....my guess here is that sims could do so, but you also have to remember that winston is a very good football player. the talent in that offense could potentially open things up for a guy like sims.
