Is this sketchy? Free Agents not part of rookie draft???

Postby picklerick » Wed Aug 16, 2017 1:42 pm

Are free agents typically involved in rookie drafts? What is the norm?

This year is the second year for this particular dynasty league, so this is the first rookie raft.

I've heard that the commissioner is not including free agents as draftable player options for the upcoming rookie draft, which (1) is weird, player values change over the off season and maybe a second stringer is now rosterable and (2) sketchy because the comish has waiver priority and will get Lynch for free

Seems questionable since Commish stands to benefit from this. The leagues I am in include Free agents in the rookie pool. My opinion is that this is the fairest way to give everyone a shot at changing values, worst -> first. That being said, it amazes me that the format was not more clearly set up before you guys came to the first actual rookie draft.

The biggest crime here is waiver priority. GTFOH. Should be blind bidding.

I am in many leagues that don't include FA's in the draft but they have blind bidding waivers after. Otherwise the ones that do include them still have blind bidding after because who the hell uses waiver priority?

It might've been ok had this not been the first year of rookie drafting and the commish standing to benefit immensely from this decision. This plain stinks. Also, never been in a dynasty where vets weren't part of the draft pool.

Have a couple of league's without FAs and a couple with FAs in the rookie draft. From this season all have gone to a Blind Bid for off season waivers.

I think the waivers is the main issue here.

Neither of my leagues includes FA's in the rookie draft as a rookie draft is for rookies. I guess I would look to see if FAs were included last year if so they should be available this year and going forward until that is stated as a change well in advance. I would also look into waiver priority - for my leagues prior to changing to blind bidding the priority did not bleed into the new year, it would follow the rookie draft over to start the new year.

Some leagues I am in FAs can be drafted, and in some they cannot be and its a true rookie draft. I even run a couple of leagues where it is Rookies only.

For leagues that do not incorporate FAs in the rookie draft then

(a) there is a separate FA Draft

or

(b) Blind Bid Waivers

or

(c) It is more rare, but not unheard of, for FAs after the draft to be settled by waiver priority.

There is no set way to do it, every league is different. However it is usually deemed fairer if it is done by BB Waivers.

1) Rookie drafts that happen earlier (i.e., April through July) are usually just for rookies.
2) Drafts that happen in August usually include free agents, as well.

Rules about rookie/FA draft should have been outlined during the league set up. If it wasn't, I would put this to the league in a poll.

Rookie drafts in my opinion are to draft rookies not free agents. Free agents should be based on waiver order that starts inverse order of standings then to last after claim.

If you had waivers with priority through Year 1 then you should have known you'd have it for Year 2. Presumably the waiver format would have been outlined in the bylaws, including how subsequent years would be setup for Week 1 (i.e. Do they simply carry over from Week 16 conclusion?). Waivers themselves I'm not a fan of and often can create unfair opportunities, so this shouldn't be a huge surprise.

Seems late to be commenting on the concern as well. Has the rookie draft happened? Can you include FA's still? Does it make sense to switch to Blind Bid Waivers given the challenge of determining order one year to the next? If it is the same method as the rookie draft then it seems they get to double dip. If people agree to change, can it change this year?

Big picture it is only Lynch, a 31 year old RB with lots of wear and tear. It won't change the landscape of a dynasty league. It also should have been considered prior to mid-August by participants and may just be sour grapes. Not a great setup though regardless. Worst case you should have one either FA's in the rookie draft OR Blind Bids, at least for offseason waivers. Priority can come after Week 1, but carrying Year to year seems silly.

Having waiver priority carry over from the previous season is absolutely sketchy.
I would demand this to be put up to a vote before waivers commence.

Something fishy going on up in there with the waiver thing. Get some rules set in stone that everyone agrees with and stick to them
