Elijah McGuire: hidden gem or doesn't matter?

Postby moishetreats » Fri Aug 04, 2017 9:27 pm

Let's assume for the sake of this thread that McGuire gets at least a handful of games to start. And let's also assume that he can handle the workload.

Does that make him a possible hidden gem?
Or...
Does it not matter since he's playing with the Jets offense?

Realistically if he shows well I could see him being a pretty good gem. Look at guys like Howard and even Dj to an extent as good players on bad teams. I don't see that team picking an early rb with all those holes

DJ? David Johnson? The Cardinals were a playoff caliber squad before he broke out, I'd hardly call them a bad team.

McGuire is more like a lottery ticket than a hidden gem imo. Forte put up a very good season with the Jets so it's not like there's no precedent for it and he looks to be in line for opportunity sooner rather than later so he's worth a bench spot in most leagues.

Yes he is a hidden gem at his current value. Fair warning I've been a big McGuire fan, he's my favorite rookie sleeper by far. I actually have him in my personal ranks above guys like Kamara, Mack, Williams who are all going well ahead of him in rookie drafts. After the 3rd round there isn't a better pick to make, and I have jumped him in the 3rd even to make sure I draft him. At the very least he has the makings of a solid 3rd down receiving back, and will likely get some kind of shot at showing that this year. But I think he gets miscast as just a 3rd down guy, I think he's capable of playing on all downs. Really like his burst and the way he can go from neutral to top gear in a couple steps. He really reminds me of D. Freeman in that aspect.

Don't expect much this year. I much prefer other sleeper backs like Pumphrey and McNichols who seem to have larger roles in better offenses.

I agree. I have made a point to pick him up as a ww add in leagues with bigger rosters.

If the Jets suck I could see a rookie getting more work than Forte/Powell for a few weeks

If?

Looks like the NY Jets have the lowest odds of winning the Super Bowl this year at 500-1. The next closest is SF at 300-1. The Browns are 250-1 .... thats right the Browns are 2x as likely to win the Super Bowl as the Jets this year!

Anyways I think depending on roster size and league setup that McGuire makes for a decent end of bench stash. :)

I have him pretty highly ranked like sugbear, not as high as him but higher than most by a lot. I got/plan to get him in all my rookie drafts in the 4th or late 3rd. He looks the part in what I saw in the shrine game. He's got a good BMI and good quickness. Being as cheap he is with old, expensive veterans in front of him, I can see him being their back while they rebuild.

I own McGuire in two leagues only because I foresee a flip opportunity by the tail end of this season. If/when he gets some playing time... FLIP him fast.

Given the other RBs on that team, he has to be considered for opportunity this season. Forte is all but done as he's no longer effective. And the Jets have no interest in having Powell as their starter. That is, unless the 7th season on the team is his breakout year...lol. every effort has been made to ensure he is not their starter.

Totally disagree. The Jets for the past several years like him a lot. As they should, he is a heck of a ball player. He is more in the complementary role like Tevin Coleman. They may not think he can hold up to 25 touches a game, but who does these days? It's a different NFL.

Elijah McGuire is a similar player to Powell. Hence they think he will fit their system and it's why they drafted him.

Can the Jets' o-line support a RB?

But seriously, I don't think it matters who is taking the handoffs. The Jets o-line is horrific...their QB situation isn't gonna take the pressure off the run game...and neither are the receivers.

Poor passing offense plus poor offensive line equals bad running situation.

FYIW, I like McGuire. However, by the time the Jets can support a RB, it may be too late for him.

I see an Artis-Payne here. 6th rounder with a possible opportunity and even though I think they'll give him a chance with an injury to either Forte or Powell, I don't see much more than 10 carries and a couple catches out of the backfield for his first year. At very best I'm going with a stat line of 370/3 for the Lafayette rookie.
