Cincinnati 2017 Offensive Outlook

Postby Servo » Sun Jun 18, 2017 2:24 pm

Just wanted to gather some opinions here of Cincy and their offense this year: with letting Whitworth and Zeitler walk in FA and not addressing their OL in the draft (outside of Round 5), could their offense be in big trouble? Or are you still buying?

I'm still buying. A lot of weapons on that offense to keep opposing defenses honest. I think AJG has a big year in '17 with less of the defensive focus placed squarely on him.

I think he'll be about what he was on pace for in 2014, 92-1400-8, same year Jeremy Hill was lighting up defenses and Sanu/Jones were still on the team, don't see why defenses would be less focused on him this year than they were then

That being said, Green is the only player aside from Dalton in 2QB leagues who I'm confident in this year, Mixon should have a good career, don't really like him all that much this year though

Middle of the road offense for me. Teams go as their QB. Middle of the road QB, middle of the road offense.

They need speed on both offense and defense and they got it with Ross and Mixon, two of the most electric offensive players in the draft.

Their d-line was too big too and lacked edge speed so nice job getting lighter and quicker with Lawson and Willis.

I initially was concerned with the loss of two key linemen, but my guess is the team is happy with Fisher at tackle and they can probably find a solid guard. Their not addressing the line in the draft suggests they have faith in the guys they have.

Maybe, or maybe it just means their line will be bad

Line could be an issue, however last year it was AJG or bust. THis year they have added Mixon (possibly best back in the class), Ross who will have to keep defenses honest, Helps AJG and Eifert. I think Mixon benefits the most due to check downs. Dalton wont have to hold the ball long to find the mismatch. If it gets real bad i expect them to operate out of shotgun more.

I keep seeing people mention John Ross around the site but what are the odds that he even plays half the season? He's not doing anything until August because of his shoulder surgery and he's already had two hamstring issues (one at the combine doing the 40 and another at OTAs) generally when a player, especially a rookie, misses extended amounts of time in the preseason it translates to missed games and poor performance in season

Write up from Twoqbs.com, Derrik Klassen, on his thoughts of Dalton this year.

I'm not the biggest Dalton fan, but there are plenty of people that are very high on AJG, Eifert, and even Ross now. Not sure how those guys put up numbers without Dalton having a solid year. On top of that, they actually have a RB now who can run the ball.

AJ Green will get his, and Tyler Eifert will get a lot of dump offs and red zone targets if he stays healthy. I'm not sure how optimistic I am about anyone else in CIN though given the terrible cheap decisions to dump their offensive line talent this offseason. Good luck to Jeremy Hill and Joe Mixon trying to get yards behind that line, and for all the talk of the long bombs John Ross will be getting, I don't see it if Dalton only has 3 seconds to throw the ball after every snap.

3 seconds is a long time to get the ball downfield to a guy who runs a 4.22 40. Ross will be 60 yds down the field by the time the ball travels that far assuming a 3 second delay between snap and release.

If he doesn't pull a hammy somewhere around 15 yards down the field

BOOM! Shots fired. Also I did the math and he'll only be 28.4 yards down the field if he runs a go route and if Dalton throws the ball of his back foot at the last second as he's being knocked down at the end of 3 seconds.

Kidding aside the line is going to be bad. Always thought Hill didn't get a fair shake because of it and now it's gotten significantly worse.
