Usually coaches say there is an open competition for a position if there is any doubt. McCarthy has publicly state after the draft that Montgomery was the starter. So yes there is a possibility, but I would make it a slim one.

Yes, but just because Montgomery plays the first few snaps as the "starter" doesn't mean Williams or Jones won't get mixed in quite a bit. Also, we don't know how much GB will limit Montgomery's touches with the whole sickle trait condition.The.Big.Spank wrote: ↑Tue May 16, 2017 5:41 am Usually coaches say there is an open competition for a position if there is any doubt. After hearing how muddled some people seem to think the GB situation is, I would use this time of uncertainty to buy Monty on the cheap if I didn't already own him everywhere. Needless to say I'm a believer, and think he's going to help a lot of teams as one of those top 15 PPR scoring RBs this year that you weren't counting on. He and Abdullah, but I'll save that for another thread.

Montgomery isn't going for cheap though. You're likely going to have to give up a 1st for him. Given the small sample size, it's probably a better buy to scoop up one of Jones or Williams late in the draft. Which one of them threatens Montgomery the most though is a tough question.sugbear65 wrote: ↑Tue May 16, 2017 2:30 pm After hearing how muddled some people seem to think the GB situation is, I would use this time of uncertainty to buy Monty on the cheap if I didn't already own him everywhere. That's a good one. New England in 2011 also drafted Vereen in the 2nd and Ridley in the 3rd. Tough to pick on winner on that one. Ridley had the one good year and didn't do much other than that, while Vereen had a couple of OK ones but never one as good as Ridley's best.IBall2 wrote: ↑Tue May 16, 2017 5:31 amIn 2013, the packers drafted Eddie Lacy in the second round and then Johnathan Franklin in the 4th.Vcize wrote: ↑Mon May 15, 2017 8:04 pm Regarding Jones, we've seen a few of these situations lately where teams drafted multiple backs in the mid/late rounds. It seems like the later guy is always the "sexy" pick that gets a lot of message board hype. How have those worked out? I'm genuinely asking here, not sure of the results. The only one I can think of offhand is Seattle and Alex Collins hasn't exactly been very relevant.

I think GB ends up like this:
Ty Montgomery 1a - 60% of touches - early down work, pass catching/screens/gadget plays
Jamaal Williams 1b - 30% of touches - short yardage and some goal-line
Aaron Jones backs up Ty Montgomery's role (10% of touches)
Mays probably gets cut or shipped to the practice squad

Re: Possibility that Any RB in GB Not Names Ty or Jamaal Wins the Job?
He had 17 rushing TDs his final season, including four 200+ rushing yard games (one of them was a 300 yarder). So. Not just a receiving back at that level, at least.
Aaron Jones has been my preferred darkhorse in GB since he was drafted. I believe elements of our community are significantly overrating Jamaal Williams, who's tape shows me to be a much slower version of Tevin Coleman.
Jones is a little bit lightweight, and he didn't carry 300 times in a season in college. Plenty of 205-210lbs RBs have managed to become lead or even feature backs in the pros, though. Jones' BMI is just south of 31 (and two points higher than Jamaal Williams), which is often more important. I'd also like to point out that although Jones played in a mid-major conference, he played three Power 5 conference opponents in 2016 and 2015, and of those games he demolished two Big 12 opponents (also wrecked Texas Tech in 2014, and Texas at the time he dominated them in '16 was ranked 11th in the country) and was respectable vs Arkansas.
I believe Jones was picked mid Day 3 because 1.) this was a deep class for RBs 2.) he played in the modest CUSA 3.) UTEP's O-line created comfortable lanes for Jones. But how fair is it to fault Jones for that latter point? He got the yards his line gave him the opportunity to gain, and usually then some.
I do worry about how he'll feel playing in cold GB. Jones is a Texas boy. Biiiiig difference in climes, there. For some guys it doesn't matter at all, for other guys it does, a lot.

The love for a LATE 5th round RB from UTEP in here is pretty wild.

Re: Possibility that Any RB in GB Not Names Ty or Jamaal Wins the Job?
Because a mid-4th round pick is so much more impressive?
In real life football, RB average-draft-position is falling. But that doesn't much alter our fantasy football context.
Btw:
Devonta Freeman, 4th round pick, Jay Ajayi, 5th round pick, Jordan Howard, 5th round pick, Lamar Miller, 4th round pick, Isaiah Crowell, undrafted, CJ Anderson, undrafted, Spencer Ware, 6th round pick, Paul Perkins, 5th round pick.
I'm not confident about how Aaron Jones will look when he actually has to deal with contact and skinny creases a lot more often than he ever he did at UTEP, but he was outrageously effective in college (accounting for half of UTEP's offense) and his burst and agility scores are gaudy. I also saw him actually high-point hail marys in the end-zone more than once, and making over the shoulder catches on fade routes.
I remember how certain you were that Tevin was golden after you watched his 'tape'.Coogan Football wrote: ↑Wed May 17, 2017 9:21 am Watch the tape, Williams is gonna be the horse in GB
Jamaal Williams' tape has almost exactly the same problems as Coleman's Indiana tape, minus the one truly great asset Coleman used to rack up 2000 yards against slow Big Ten Ds. Williams, like Coleman, has stiff hips, poor lateral agility, mediocre balance, runs into his own blockers, poor pad-level, low BMI, and runs aggressively into contact but rarely actually breaks it. But while Coleman has legitimately elite, pursuit-angle destroying speed in the open field, Jamaal Williams runs a 4.6 40.
