John Ross Comp

Postby ThirdWW » Fri May 12, 2017 7:39 am

I've seen most John Ross comprisions as Desean Jackson. Why does Brandon Cooks never get mentioned? Similar size, obviously. Watching Ross' he's more than just a go route player. Curious to hear thoughts.

I love John Ross, but the injuries were what scared me away. So injury prone
I may or may not be related to Bryan Edwards

I see Cooks and in watching his tape, I saw some Diggs in the way he could make sudden breaks in his routes.

I think if he were to fall in our draft (which he very well could) I could be tempted to use a 2nd on him.....unless I draft Mixon.

Okay I dont blame anyone for being concerned with his knee injuries (scared me away too), but dont you think it is not as big a deal as it sounds? He still ran a 4.22 (imagine if he didnt demolish his knees), and he was taken at 9th overall. He MUST have passed the medical tests with flying colours, because an NFL GM wont reach for Ross without him being perfectly fine physically (especially with a top 10 pick).
Thoughts?

Def think he brings more to the table than 9 routes. Drafted him and have high hopes despite concerns about target volume.

DeSean Jackson is the stat box comparison - skinny + fast = must be Djax (although Ross looks slightly taller and at least 10 lbs heavier than Djax was coming out?).

I see more of a Cooks-Diggs-DJax hybrid on tape. Ross' build and movement skills are similar to Djax/Diggs, but Ross has quite a bit more to his game as a receiver than Djax and is closer to Cooks in this area (even though Ross and Cooks have similar height-weight numbers, they're built quite differently).

The laziest comparison I keep seeing is John Ross=Will Fuller. I don't get that one at all. That one is the equivalent of redraft stat box scouts basing everything off numbers with no context/tape.

I can see the Cooks/Hilton comparisons, but I see a bit of Stefon Diggs when he was at Maryland - specifically the build, the way he moves, and the way he catches the ball at times. However, Ross is a lot faster than Diggs in a straight line so I think this is where the DJax comparisons come into play.

I agree with the Diggs one, before the combine I said he looks like a faster more athletic Diggs. Kind of interesting I've seen that comp thrown around a few times since then.

Because DJax was a real threat as a return man. Cooks... naaaaaaaaaht so much. Ross is quite possibly this year's Tyreek because of that.

I don't think the Diggs comparison is very accurate. Diggs is a significantly better route runner and is way more advanced technically than Ross coming out. Ross is really fast and explosive, but his route tree is limited and he struggles with physical coverage. His play strength needs work. Cooks was a much better route runner too coming out.

DeSean Jackson is a good one. Maybe Will Fuller too.

Except Fuller didn't have a 99 yard kick return in any of his college years. That's largely due to him not being a return man at all. John Ross returned 4 kicks for TDs, and had a 100 yarder in each of his 3 years. He's DJax for that reason. Explosive in more than one phase of the game.

Reception perception suggests just about the opposite of all this.

If we are talking about NFL comparisons, when watching his tape I was always reminded of watching Eddie Royal. Don't mean that in a good or bad way, just who it brought to mind for me.
