Breakout TEs

Postby bruiser » Wed Apr 26, 2017 10:04 pm

Name some TEs ready for that breakout performance a la Cam Brate 2016. TomK just posted a nice graphic to remind us how extreme the risk is to count on TE rookie production. I need producting from TE now! Not later.
Just a guy who loves fantasy football - specifically defense.

Doyle seems like an obvious name. Hooper should have opportunities. Higbee has been hyped by his new coach.

Maybe Ladarius stays healthy this year and has that monster season that's been predicted for the last 3 years.

Those are 3 good names. Higbee and Hooper are on the come up. Some deeper stashes for the roster I've been watching is Swoope now that Allen left Indy and AJ Derby with the Broncos. But OP isn't looking for later. So I'd say Doyle, Hooper or Higbee are probably the popular sleepers at the moment.

I have Ladarius in a few leagues and I was reading tonight that the Steelers still aren't sure about his health and Big Ben is lobbying for them to draft a pass receiving TE.....

Breakout candidates sounds a bit hit or miss if you need production now. Guys like Tye, Derby, Sims, James etc may never break out. (FWIW I'm stashing Derby and Swoope.)

Why not invest cheaply in an older player like Witten or Delanie? Either that or pick up every TE in Baltimore and see who gets the targets.

If San Francisco can form some sort of an offense, Vance McDonald could be a good option. The Shanahan system generally uses the TE a fair bit and McDonald is arguably their best receiving option.

Roethlisberger is vehemently denying that report.

While we are on the subject of the Steelers, the breakout TE to own is Jesse James.

I like McDonald too. I've been sitting on that egg for four years.

Jack, Vance are pretty cheap. Tier above the rest.

Agree Walker, Witten as boring but safe older guys.

With all the rookies coming in to me it's about opportunity....TE is going to be REAL deep in 2017.....a perfect time to stream TE's.....even in the deepest leagues.....

Note...watch the D's last year if you would have picked up and played whoever played Cleveland you had a TE1........and never underestimate the consistent guys....right now Kyle Rudolf is TE 11....but had a real consistent year....

Others further down the list:
Gates @ TE18 - he's gonna get the TD record...then fade away ...but week to week play....
Fleener@ 22 is a streamer....talent can he get in form in yr 2?
J Thomas @23 - in Miami...if the QB can get him the ball...
D allen in NE? @26

lots of choices don't sweat it...then with 8 or so rookies.......whoever goes to Balt, Pitt....about opportunity....

I wish I could say Maxx Williams but I'm losing the faith. ASJ has the athletic ability but will he always be a knucklehead?

Two cheap candidates:
(If Cleveland doesn't draft a TE)- Seth Devalve could be in line for some sneaky production, possibly TE2 numbers. Though a lot of mocks having them taking a TE.

Best breakout candidate is also the cheapest:
Erik Swoope.
Indy has shown they can have two productive TEs and everyone is looking at Doyle. 16 catches for 297 yards and a TD in 2016. This is from a guy who played NO COLLEGE FOOTBALL. College bball player at Miami, ran low 4.6 forty and had a 35 inch vert (2nd highest among 2014 TEs). Undrafted in 2014, signed and waived. Colts practice squad in 2015. Then in 2016 he puts up 16/297/1.

He has some VERY interesting stats from PFF:
-Colts tight end Erik Swoope played the most snaps in Week 6 when he got on the field for 40 plays after Dwayne Allen’s injury.
-The Colts threw the second most touchdowns to tight ends in the league with 12, behind only the Los Angeles Chargers (15).
-Only five teams threw to their tight ends more than Indianapolis last year (141 times).
-Swoope was second in the league last year in yards per route run among tight ends with at least 20 targets (3.09), behind only Rob Gronkowski (3.18)

We know from his meteoric rise he is a hard worker and student of the game. From Chuck Pagano in 2014:
"Every time I walk by the tight-end meeting room, he's in there watching tape, he's with (tight ends coach) Alfredo Roberts studying and learning," Pagano added. "He's doing a great job to this point."

Buy Erik Swoope now! He's probably unowned or super cheap in most leagues.
Remember where you are - this is Thunderdome.

Pricey but worth it: Kelce
Aging vet worth the price: Jack Doyle (old man but a great situation...
Cheaper: Coby Fleener (2nd year in that offense could maybe be all he needed)
Dirt Cheap: Lance Kendricks (people are talking about Bennett but I could see Kendricks becoming a weapon and he's prob free right now)
Super Sleeper: Erik Swoope (showed some promise... if Doyle gets banged up, just maybe...)

Doyle is only 26 so not sure about the old man/aging vet, but does have a great situation.

Jared Cook could be interesting in Oakland, but I feel like it is the same store with him every year.

I like fleener as a breakout only because he is dirt cheap and with Cooks gone he should be able to get a little more production (one would think). Doyle is an obvious one, I really do like Vance Mcdonald as well. Id also buy stock in Bennett this year but not sure he can be considered a breakout.
